Pantanal Tours from Cuiabá: Your Gateway to the Northern Pantanal

The Northern Pantanal is the wild, jaguar-rich half of the world’s largest tropical wetland, and almost every trip begins in Cuiabá, capital of Mato Grosso. Tours from Cuiabá head south into the Pantanal, a floodplain of over 210,000 km² that holds one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in South America.

Cuiabá’s Marechal Rondon International Airport (CGB) takes daily flights from São Paulo, Brasília, and Rio de Janeiro. From there, it is about 2 hours by road to Poconé, the last town before the wetlands, then the Transpantaneira—a 147 km dirt road that ends at Porto Jofre, deep in jaguar country by the Meeting of Waters State Park. Depending on your lodge, transfers run 2 to 6 hours, and the drive itself is a first safari, with caimans, capybaras, and dozens of bird species along the way.

This is wildlife-watching country. Most outings are boat safaris on the Cuiabá and Piquiri rivers, where the banks deliver giant otters, capybaras, hyacinth macaws, and the jabiru stork. Additionally, the Northern Pantanal is the best place in the world for Pantanal jaguar tours. Prefer the bigger picture across both halves of the wetland? Our broader Pantanal tours cover the south and Bonito too!

Timing matters here. The dry season (May to October) brings firmer roads, easier access, and peak wildlife visibility, while the wet season (December to March) floods the plains for excellent birdwatching by boat. Most travelers spend 4 days or more given the distances involved.
