Trekking in Brazil: Which multi-day route is right for you?

A multi-day trek means several days of walking point to point, sleeping where the trail takes you, and reaching ground you cannot see any other way. Trekking in Brazil spans four very different worlds: the canyon villages of Chapada Diamantina, the table-top mountains on the Amazon’s northern rim, the golden dunes of the Cerrado, and the freshwater lagoons that pool between the sand sheets of the Lençóis Maranhenses. What they share is distance, remoteness, and a local guide who carries the whole route in their head. Our treks run in small groups of 5 to 12, with roughly 1 guide for every 5 walkers.

The flagship is the Vale do Pati Trek, a 5-day point-to-point crossing of Chapada Diamantina from the village of Guiné to Andaraí, sleeping in family homestays deep inside the valley. For altitude and raw geology, the Mount Roraima Trek climbs an 8-day route onto a 2,810 m sandstone tepui at the triple border of Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana, with 3 nights camped on the summit. For desert-style walking, the 6-day Jalapão Trekking Immersion crosses the Cerrado’s dunes, table mountains, and fervedouros (spring-fed pools so buoyant you float upright).

The most unique landscape of all is the 4-day Lençóis Maranhenses Trekking, a 48 km crossing of a UNESCO World Heritage desert where rainwater collects into thousands of clear lagoons between the dunes. You walk roughly 6 to 16 km a day at a moderate pace from Baixa Grande to Queimada dos Britos to Rancharia, sleeping in hammocks at family homes in the oases and swimming in a different lagoon at almost every stop. Four landscapes, one style of travel.

You don’t have to be an athlete, but you do need to be comfortable walking several hours a day on uneven ground or soft sand. Most of our trekkers exercise regularly rather than train specially. Comfort is honest: nights are spent in rustic homestays, hammocks, or tents, bathrooms are usually shared, hot showers are rare, and there is no Wi-Fi for days at a time.

Each trek includes the guiding, the in-route accommodation, the meals listed in the itinerary, and transfers from the base city, plus a local guide on the protected routes. It does not include international or domestic flights. Most departures are small shared groups, and many routes can run as a fully private trek for your party alone, which suits families or anyone who wants to set their own pace.
