Luxury Pantanal and Amazon Trip: Jaguars & Rainforest

Amazon
8 Nights·10 Days

Overview

This is the most exclusive way to enjoy a Brazilian wildlife tour in one journey. A 10-day luxury Pantanal and Amazon trip pairs two of the country’s greatest biomes, both experienced from genuinely comfortable accommodations. You begin at Caiman, a 53,000-hectare private reserve in the Pantanal, and finish deep inside the Cristalino Jungle Lodge in the Amazon.

Caiman is the only place in the Southern Pantanal where jaguars are tracked and seen reliably from open safari vehicles. After several full days of game drives, guided walks, and sunset canoeing, a short flight north carries you to Cristalino, an 11,399-hectare private reserve that National Geographic rates among the world’s finest eco-lodges.

The two legs link through one efficient domestic flight corridor (Campo Grande to Cuiabá to Alta Floresta), so there is no long repositioning to Manaus. It is a premium wildlife journey built for travelers who want the best of the Pantanal jaguar safari and the deep Amazon Rainforest in a single trip, with private guiding throughout.

  • Full itinerary: 4x4 safaris, guided walks, sunset canoeing, and night spotlighting at Caiman, then rainforest hikes, river canoeing, birdwatching, and canopy-tower sunsets at Cristalino.
  • Wildlife viewing at both destinations, including chances to spot jaguars, caimans, tapirs, giant anteaters, ocelots, etc.
  • Canoeing the Cristalino and Teles Pires rivers through flooded forest.
  • Fantastic stay experience at Caiman and Cristalino lodges, both featuring high-end facilities and personalized services.
  • Smart routing: Campo Grande to Cuiabá to Alta Floresta, one domestic corridor with no Manaus detour.
  • Activities guided by English-speaking local experts on both legs.
  • All-inclusive experience: private round-trip transfers within each leg, both luxury lodges, full board, all guided activities, and bilingual guides throughout.
  • Please note: the day-by-day plan below is a suggested itinerary. Caiman runs two roughly 3-hour safaris a day, and Cristalino runs two guided activities a day, both confirmed on arrival by weather, water levels, and recent sightings.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Campo Grande / Transfer to Caiman / Afternoon Safari

  • Arrive Campo Grande (CGR)· international gateway
  • Driving Campo Grande → Caiman (Miranda)· 236 km · ~3h30
  • Afternoon game-drive safari· with sunset canoe & night spotlighting on return

Land in Campo Grande and travel by private transfer about 3.5 hours (236 km) to Caiman Ecological Refuge, in Miranda, at the heart of the Southern Pantanal. The drive is your introduction to the wetland: open grassland, roadside caimans and wading birds, plus the vast horizon that defines the region.

You arrive with time to settle into your accommodation before the afternoon cools. The first game-drive safari then eases you into the rhythm of the reserve, scanning for capybaras, marsh deer, and abundant birdlife from an open 4×4.

If conditions allow, a sunset canoe follows. The return to the lodge after dark turns into night spotlighting, when eyeshine along the Pantanal track reveals caimans and the first nocturnal animals.

Day 2

Early-Morning Safari & Walk / Afternoon Jaguar Safari / Night Spotlighting

  • Early-morning safari & guided walk· ~5:30–6 AM
  • Afternoon jaguar safari· ~3 hrs
  • Night spotlighting· on return

An early-morning safari (around 5:30 to 6 AM) makes the most of peak wildlife hours, when animals are on the move and the light is soft. The guided walk slows the pace to what a vehicle misses: tracks, insects, plants, and the smaller residents of the grassland, read by a guide who knows the terrain. Later, rest at the lodge during the quiet midday heat.

Afternoons are prime time for a Pantanal jaguar safari at Caiman, so make sure to enjoy every second. As light fades, the spotlight comes out again for ocelots, tapirs, and other animals that only move after dark.

Day 3

Morning Safari / Afternoon Safari & Sunset Canoeing

  • Morning safari· ~3 hrs
  • Afternoon safari with sunset canoeing· conditions permitting

The morning safari opens the third day of your luxury Pantanal and Amazon trip with more wildlife watching. Each sector has its own character, from open floodplain to gallery forest, so moving between them widens the range of species you meet across the day.

Head out again in the afternoon for sunset canoeing on the water if conditions allow. Paddling brings you to eye level with caimans, kingfishers, and capybaras along the banks while the sky turns.

Meals included: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Day 4

Full-Day Safari

  • Two safari outings· new corners of the reserve
  • Wildlife photography· tailored to recent sightings

Two more safari outings explore fresh corners of the 53,000-hectare property, planned around recent sightings. By now, you have covered enough ground to read the reserve, and the guides push toward the areas with the strongest activity—whether that means jaguars, giant anteaters, or the striking hyacinth macaws.

With Caiman’s habituated jaguars and superb light, this is a favorite day for wildlife photographers on the whole Amazon and Pantanal tour. The unhurried pace is deliberate: time to wait at a sighting, work the light, and let behavior unfold.

Meals included: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Day 5

Final Morning Safari / Transfer to Campo Grande / Fly to the Amazon

  • Final morning safari or walk
  • Transfer back to Campo Grande· ~3h30 · arriving ~3 PM
  • Fly Campo Grande → Cuiabá → Alta Floresta· reposition to the Amazon leg

A final morning safari or walk closes the Caiman leg. Use it for whatever the stay has been building toward: one more attempt at a jaguar, a quieter walk, or simply the birds around the lodge over breakfast.

After lunch, a private transfer returns you to Campo Grande (about 3.5 hours), arriving around 3 PM. From there, fly the Campo Grande to Cuiabá to Alta Floresta corridor to reach the Amazon, with an overnight in transit as needed.

Meals included: Breakfast / Lunch

Day 6

Arrive Alta Floresta / Boat to Cristalino / Intro Hike

  • Arrive Alta Floresta (AFL)· via Cuiabá
  • Road + Cristalino River boat to the lodge· ~1 h road + boat
  • Short introduction hike

You arrive in Alta Floresta and transfer by road and a scenic boat ride along the Teles Pires and Cristalino rivers to reach Cristalino Jungle Lodge. The boat leg is the real threshold into the Amazon: the river narrows, the forest closes in, and the soundscape shifts to insects, frogs, and birds.

After check-in, a short introduction hike settles you into the rainforest. It is brief by design, enough to stretch after travel, meet your guide, and tune your senses to the forest before the fuller days ahead.

Day 7

Sierra Trails Hike / Teles Pires River Canoe / Floating Deck

  • Hiking the Sierra Trails· ~250–450 m elevation
  • Afternoon canoe or boat· Teles Pires River
  • Evening on the floating deck

The morning takes you along the Sierra Trails, with about 250 to 450 meters of elevation and wide views over the canopy. The climb passes through changing forest types, with your guide pointing out monkeys, birds, and the plant life that layers the understory.

In the afternoon, paddle or cruise the Teles Pires River, where the banks are good for spotting wildlife coming down to drink. Back at the lodge, the floating deck on the Cristalino River is the place to wind down and watch the forest settle as its night chorus begins.

Meals included: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Day 8

Morning Birdwatching Hike / 50-metre Tower Sunset

  • Birdwatching hike· part of ~600 recorded species
  • Climb the 50-metre observation towers· sunset above the canopy

A morning birdwatching hike puts you among the reserve’s roughly 600 bird species. Cristalino is one of the best birding sites in the Amazon, and an early start is when the forest is most active. Expect mixed flocks moving through, with chances to spot parrots, trogons, and raptors.

In the afternoon, climb one of Cristalino’s 50-meter observation towers, which changes the scale entirely for observation. From the platform, you look out across the treetops rather than up at them. Sunset atop, with birds returning to roost above the canopy, is surely one of the highlights of this Amazon and Pantanal tour.

Day 9

Deeper Forest Trails / Flooded-Forest Canoeing

  • Deeper forest trails· ancient trees, bamboo, rock formations
  • Flooded-forest canoeing· Cristalino River

The day goes deeper into the forest on trails past ancient trees, bamboo stands, and rock formations, then out onto the Cristalino River for flooded-forest canoeing. It is the quiet, immersive side of nature that makes this luxury Pantanal and Amazon trip feel complete.

These longer trails reward patience with the forest’s detail: towering emergent trees, dense bamboo, and rock formations that hint at the region’s geology, all explained by your guide.

Day 10

Final Activity / Transfer to Alta Floresta / Fly Home

  • Last breakfast & short final activity
  • Transfer to Alta Floresta and fly home· via Cuiabá

After a last breakfast, a short final activity closes the trip: a gentle walk or boat outing depending on timing and water levels and a last chance to say goodbye to the forest.

From there, transfer back to Alta Floresta to fly home via Cuiabá. Book onward flights with enough buffer for the connection.

Meals included: Breakfast
