About the adventure
This luxury vacation in the Pantanal offers an unparalleled wildlife adventure at Caiman, distinguished as the only destination in the entire Southern Pantanal where guests can reliably track and spot jaguars in the wild, thanks to its partnership with the Onçafari Project.

Beyond the iconic animal sightings, the itinerary features a diverse range of activities designed for full immersion in the region’s rich biodiversity, such as guided ecological walks, horseback riding, and canoe trips.
This high-end experience is centered around a stay at a luxury ecolodge in the Pantanal, combining refined comfort and premium service with a strong commitment to environmental conservation. Stays typically start from 4 days and 3 nights, with the flexibility to extend your time in the region.

❗Please note: Each activity lasts approximately 3 hours, and schedules are subject to change. The itinerary is only a suggested plan and will be confirmed upon arrival at the lodge; it may also be adjusted due to weather conditions or the specific needs of the group. Activities on check-in and check-out days depend on your arrival and departure times.

Day by day
📍 Departure from Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul: PlanetaEXO’s local partner will pick you up at the airport or your hotel at 10 AM. The drive to the lodge, in the municipality of Miranda, takes around 3.5 hours (236 km).

After check-in at Caiman, take some time to relax before your first activity. In the afternoon, head out for your first safari experience to explore the Pantanal during one of the best times of day for wildlife observation.

Depending on weather conditions, this outing may include a canoeing experience at sunset. On the return, after dark, guides use spotlights to observe nocturnal animals such as caimans, owls, and ocelots!
Start the day early, around 5:30–6:00 AM, when wildlife activity is at its peak. During the safari, there is typically a stop for a guided walking trail, offering a closer look at the Pantanal’s ecosystem.

After returning to the lodge for lunch and some time to rest, head out again in the afternoon for another safari to look for jaguars and other animals. This second outing offers different perspectives of the landscape and wildlife, often including beautiful sunset views.

Based on the current weather, canoeing may be part of the afternoon activity. As night falls, nocturnal wildlife observation takes place naturally during the return to the lodge.
Begin the day with another early morning safari, continuing your search for jaguars and other wildlife across different areas of Caiman. Each outing is adapted based on recent sightings and environmental conditions, maximizing your chances of meaningful encounters.

Return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation before heading out again in the afternoon. This safari once again combines wildlife observation with the changing light of the Pantanal and may include canoeing at sunset if conditions allow.

On the way back after dark, guides conduct nocturnal spotting as part of the experience.
It’s the final day of your Pantanal Luxury Jaguar Safari, but the adventure isn’t over yet. Enjoy one last morning activity—usually a safari, with the possibility of a short walk depending on timing and conditions—to immerse yourself in nature one last time.

Frequently Asked Questions
This experience is considered luxury due to Caiman’s high-end infrastructure, personalized service, and its expansive private territory of around 53,000 hectares. It also offers one of the highest incidences of jaguar sightings in the Southern Pantanal, which requires specialized logistics and the expertise of highly qualified professionals.
The Pantanal Luxury Safari is recommended for wildlife enthusiasts, couples, friend groups, and families.
This tour operates year-round. From May to October, departures are scheduled exclusively on Thursdays (4-day tour) and Sundays (5-day tour). During the rest of the year, dates are more flexible, with a minimum stay of 3 days. Contact us to check availability.
Activities are organized into two safari outings per day, one in the early morning and one in the afternoon, when wildlife is most active and conditions are ideal for exploration.
Morning safaris usually start around 5:30–6:00 AM and may include a guided walking trail, offering a closer look at the Pantanal’s ecosystem. After returning to the lodge for meals and rest, guests head out again in the afternoon, typically around 3:30–4:00 PM, for another safari experience that often includes sunset views.
Depending on weather conditions, the afternoon outing may also include a canoeing experience. Night wildlife observation is not a separate activity; it takes place during the return of the afternoon safari, when guides use spotlights to observe nocturnal animals.
All activities are arranged by the lodge’s team and may be adjusted based on weather and operational conditions to ensure the best possible experience.
The minimum age is 8 years old. Children under this age and older may only stay in Caiman’s Private Villa, an accommodation featuring 6 suites reserved exclusively for small groups. Depending on their age and size, children may not participate in horseback riding excursions.
Elderly guests with some kind of reduced mobility might not enjoy the jaguar safari and other activities to the fullest.
Rates for children depend on room occupancy. If a child shares a room with one adult, the full adult rate applies. To share a room with two adults, the only option is a Superior Suite, which has an additional cost of 30% on top of the rate, plus the required environmental fee (charged per person).
At the moment, there are no specific discounts for seniors.
Yes, the prices for the Pantanal Luxury Safari at Caiman vary according to season:
- Shoulder season: January, February, March, April, May, November, and December (except national holidays).
- High season: June, September, and October (except national holidays).
- Peak season and national holidays: July, August, and national holidays.
April, May, and November offer the best rates and opportunities for wildlife viewing due to the rainy season and the time of year when jaguars are most frequently sighted. In general, the beginning of these months offers the highest chances of sightings. Contact us to check availability and rates.

Yes, you can customize the length of your stay between October and May, with a minimum of 3 nights. Outside this period, departures are fixed and scheduled exclusively on Thursdays (4-day tour) and Sundays (5-day tour).
Another option is to combine the Southern Pantanal with the Northern Pantanal. Keep in mind that these regions are located in different states (Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso) and are accessed via Campo Grande (South) and Cuiabá (North). The distance between them exceeds 700 km, and the most practical way to travel between both is by commercial flight.
You can also extend your trip with a visit to Bonito, which is located in Mato Grosso do Sul and combines well logistically with the Southern Pantanal, offering a different experience focused on crystal-clear rivers, waterfalls, and snorkeling activities.
The itinerary previously mentioned is a suggestion. You will be provided with an official schedule upon arrival at the lodge, which can be altered due to weather conditions, logistics, or the specific needs of each group.
Other important information:
- Each activity lasts around 3 hours.
- Activities and lunch for check-in and check-out days depend on arrival and departure times.
- Activities generally begin early in the morning and in the late afternoon, as wildlife sightings are scarce between 11 AM and 3 PM. During this time, you can relax and enjoy Caiman’s facilities.
- The package includes lunch on the day of departure, depending on your arrival time at Caiman, but it’s not included on the first day. You can pay an additional cost directly at the lodge to have lunch upon arrival (please let us know in advance).
Groups typically consist of up to 8 guests. Each group is accompanied by both an English-speaking guide and a local native guide.
If you are looking for a fully private experience, you can opt for the Private Villa—an exclusive accommodation with 6 suites reserved entirely for your group.
Although the North is considered the best place to spot jaguars in Brazil, the Southern Pantanal isn’t left behind. Partnering with the Onçafari Project, Caiman is the only place in the South where jaguars are often observed, with a 98% chance of spotting them.
The efforts of both institutions help jaguars to get used to the presence of vehicles and humans at a respectful distance, allowing for frequent sightings without altering their natural behavior.
Keep in mind: It’s not required to book the Onçafari experience to see jaguars since you have a high chance of spotting them during the regular activities, but be aware that sightings are less regular during the flood season (December to March). If you want to see jaguars, you should book your trip between May and October.

Even once you reach Campo Grande, you still have a four hour drive of which the last hour is over a bumpy dirt road. However, the Lodge is well worth the effort! The hotel is really stunning with the all artwork, furnishings, the grounds, common areas, the Layout and views. There are small animals and all kinds of exotic birds on the grounds. Our room was nice and comfortable. The service is exceptional as is the food and most of the staff speaks English. Meals in the dinning area are served buffet style with lots of healthy options. There are are also many traditional Brazilian dishes to try. One evening the staff hosted a churrasco (Brazilian BBQ) outside the hotel gate for all guests . Another night we had another off site constellation lecture followed by dinner under the stars. However, the highlight to the Lodge are the safaris. Each morning early and then again in the late afternoon we left the lodge to look for birds and animals. We saw jaguars (including two mating couples), tapirs, marsh deer, capybara, toucans, macaws, rheas, monkeys just to name a few. Each 4x4 had a local as a driver and an English speaking guides. The drivers and guides we had were outstanding! They were passionate about the animals, genuinely excited to find animals for us and to share their knowledge. Each safari is approximately 3 hours in length and I never wanted them to end. I can’t say enough good things this experience. …read more read lessDate of Experience: July 10, 2024

We stayed in a lodge and our room was spacious, clean and well equipped. Airco was functioning well and this is essential as this area is HOT! As mosquitos are everywhere and bite even through your clothes (wear 2 layers!) we were very surprised not to have a mosquito net around the bed, we found this to be incomprehensible. The safaris we did with our guide were amazing. We saw a lot of wildlife and were adequately informed. We forgot to bring binoculars but you can rent them at the front desk. We were very pleased with our stay and the experience but however we feel we can not give the highest rating because 2 factors are really in need of evaluation by the management: 1. lack of physical mosquito protection in room (there is a plug-in chemical repellent option but mosquitos are not impressed :-) ) 2. the buffet-style meals. Food is good but the scale of the hotel certainly allows for meals to be served and guests to have their dedicated table which would add to the experience as it would feel more personal and would better suit the overall service level which is very attentive and client-oriented. In conclusion we would surely recommend to include it in your itinerary. …read more read lessDate of Experience: June 15, 2024

Getting there is not easy - fly to Campo Grande, then a four hour drive, but well worth it. We took the four night package, and the game drives were also excellent. Expect early starts, chilly mornings (it was winter when we were there) and a few hours in the jeep. The Oncafari day with the conservation team was excellent, and it is great to learn about the emphasis on ensuring the wildlife lives in harmony with ranchers. We saw a vast array of animals - Jaguars, a Maned Wolf (rare apparently here), Giant Anteater, birds, caiman and lots more. Fabulous. …read more read lessDate of Experience: June 15, 2024 -

The lodge and grounds are beautiful, After spending 6 fantastic days in the Northern Pantanal, we arrived at the Refuge wondering if it was just going to be a rehash - we were so WOW'ed! The lodge and grounds are beautiful, warm and welcoming. Wi-fi was not great in our room (I think our particular room was just out of range), but I was more than happy to relax in the posh and comfy public living spaces to get online. The gym was probably the best I have seen at a hotel/lodge. It's brand new, the equipment is well-designed and it has everything you need for a good workout. The staff is young, hip, friendly and helpful. Dining is easy, healthy and fresh, lots of yummy options with a couple very special dinner experiences. Our tracker and guide were so lovely and truly exceptional. I appreciated that our guide started off our visit with a short and informative presentation about the Pantanal that gave great background and perspective. The second guide had a great eye and instinct. The animal experiences: not only did we see jaguars, giant anteaters, tapirs, peccary, capybaras, agoutis, foxes, marsh deer and birds of all sort; we saw jaguars mating, climbing trees, eating fish, with cubs, guarding prey; anteaters carrying babies on their backs; toucans mating. We caught glimpses of the elusive ocelot and tayra. (In contrast with the northern pantanal, we didn't see giant river otter or anaconda here and the number and size of caimans were much smaller. Just noting, if those animals are important for you to see. We were there in the dry season, I don't know if that makes any difference.) We thoroughly enjoyed the other couples in our open air safari vehicle and since some did optional tours with Oncafari and the Hyacinth Macaw project, our safari jeep was not always full. We spent a morning with the Macaw project and the experience was well-worth it. We went along for nest visits, learned so much and even saw a newborn chick! The vet and biologist we spent time with were delightful and so dedicated. They also had a lot of admiration for the owner of the ranch as a visionary and supporter of conservation efforts and the community. We stayed in the lodge; there are individual villas, as well. Unless you are with your own group or truly seeking total privacy, I would recommend the lodge. The facilities are fabulous and there's plenty of places and spaces for quiet space. You can tell, they put so much into every detail to make it a beautiful, memorable experience. Other helpful bits... The road from Campo Grande is really good, until it's not - lol! Once you turn off the main road, there's quite a long drive on an uneven, unfinished road. It's expensive, but probably worth hiring a driver. The lodge will provide options. Regarding bugs, they were only an issue starting at dusk for a while until after sunset - but they were really pretty bad. There was mosquito spray in the vehicle, use it and cover up as much as possible. I had insect repellent clothing and it didn't help alone. But seeing everything we saw on those evening game drives was worth it. …read more read lessDate of Experience: November 02, 2023
