Brazil 4x4 tours: how to reach Jalapão and Lençóis Maranhenses without trekking

In the most remote parks, the road is the adventure. Brazil 4×4 tours run on dirt tracks, soft sand, and shallow river crossings to reach scenery that paved roads never touch: the white dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses, a 1,550 km2 park made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024, and the cerrado of Jalapão, the largest state park in Tocantins. Both sit hours from the nearest city on unpaved roads, which is exactly why a 4×4 here is the only way in.

In Jalapão, a 4×4 tour is a multi-day overland expedition. From Palmas, the state capital, it is a 3 to 5 hour transfer to the park, almost all of it unpaved, and daily drives of 95 to 308 km link the golden dunes, the Pedra Furada arch, the Encantado Canyon, and the fervedouros (spring-fed pools so dense with water that you cannot sink). Trips run 4 to 6 days, and the dirt-road sections are the trip itself, broken up by waterfalls, river beaches, and visits to Quilombola communities like Mumbuca.

Lençóis Maranhenses works the opposite way. Here, the 4×4 tours are short and scenic rather than expeditions: from the gateway towns of Barreirinhas, Atins, and Santo Amaro, open-top 4×4 vehicles climb the dunes to lagoons such as Lagoa do Junco, Lagoa Azul, and Lagoa do Reflexo—a 30 to 45 minute ride each way with only a short walk over the sand at the end. The final stretch into Santo Amaro is reachable only by 4×4.

Both parks reward an overland mindset. The Route of Emotions links Lençóis Maranhenses to Jericoacoara by 4×4, ferry, and dune buggy across three states over six days. This is the most adventurous way to string the region together.

Timing matters: the Lençóis lagoons are fullest from June to September after the rains, while Jalapão’s dry season (April to October) keeps the dirt roads firm and the fervedouros clear. Temperatures in both parks sit between 24°C at night and 32 to 35°C by day, with a high UV index year-round.
