Day 1

Arrival at Mirante do Gavião / Anavilhanas National Park

  • Departure from Manaus, Amazonas: PlanetaEXO’s local partner will pick up at your hotel in the city. The drive to Novo Airão, where Mirante do Gavião Amazon Lodge is located, takes around 2.5 hours (180 km).

Check into your room and explore Mirante do Gavião’s gorgeous facilities. At 4 PM, you board a voadeira (speedboat) for a tour of Anavilhanas National Park, with clear sandy beaches in the dry season (June to November) or flooded treetop channels in the rainy season (December to May).

Your day in the Amazon Rainforest ends watching the sunset over the Rio Negro, followed by a guided nocturnal wildlife tour and dinner at the lodge.

Day 2

Madadá Caves / Anavilhanas Archipelago

After breakfast, a boat takes you to Casa Rosa, a small riverside museum, where the trail to the Madadá Caves begins. The roughly 3-hour walk follows a flat, easy trail with stops to learn about the region’s flora and fauna before a traditional grilled-fish lunch.

You then cruise back through the islands of Anavilhanas, cooling off on white-sand beaches in the dry months or trying recreational piranha fishing when the waters rise. Later, return to Mirante do Gavião for dinner and enjoy the lodge’s facilities.

Day 3

Riverside communities (Santo Antônio & Tiririca) / Kapok Trees

In the dry season, the day starts with a speedboat ride to the riverside villages of Santo Antônio and Tiririca, a guided forest walk, and a traditional charcoal-grilled Amazonian fish lunch with a local caboclo family. The afternoon is spent relaxing at Tiririca Beach and visiting the giant Macucu tree in the igapó (flooded forest).

In the rainy season, the day instead heads to the Sobrado community and the majestic kapok trees, with a community-prepared fish lunch, returning through the vibrant, flooded forest before dinner.

Day 4

Educational projects in Novo Airão & return to Manaus

  • Departure from Mirante do Gavião, Novo Airão: PlanetaEXO’s local partner will transfer you back to Manaus from 7 AM to 3 PM. The drive to the city takes around 2.5 hours (180 km).

After breakfast, the “Be a Local” land tour visits projects supported by the lodge in Novo Airão: the Almerinda Malaquias Foundation, the Floating Pink River Dolphin Project, indigenous handicraft and bio-jewelry shops, and the Jirau Gallery.

Afterwards, return to the lodge for check-out by 11 AM (lunch not included) or starting at 2 PM (lunch included).
