Real guests, real trips. These are the words of travelers who booked their Salkantay trek tours with PlanetaEXO!
Mount Salkantay (6,271 m) is the highest peak of the Vilcabamba range and the 12th highest in Peru, about 60 km west-northwest of Cusco. Instead of climbing the mountain, the classic trail crosses the Salkantay Pass at 4,636 m, then drops almost 2,600 m through cloud forest toward Machu Picchu.
The classic route covers about 60 km in four days on foot, through Andean culture as much as mountains. For the Incas, Salkantay was an apu, a sacred mountain spirit. The walk passes the village of Mollepata, Humantay Lake, farming families in the Salkantay River valley, and coffee farms, then climbs Inca steps to Llactapata.
Salkantay trek tours differ most in where you sleep and how long you walk. Our 3-day lodge hike includes the pass and Humantay Lake but skips Machu Picchu. The classic 5-day trek uses a cabana, hut, and geodesic dome; it is also available as an 8-day trip adding Cusco and the Sacred Valley.
Additionally, we offer a 5-day camping route joining the Inca Trail and a 7-day lodge-to-lodge trek featuring hot tubs.
