4 Nights·5 Days

Overview

Embarking on the self-guided W Trek in Chilean Patagonia allows you to explore at your own pace while leaving the complex logistics to experienced professionals. This fully organized adventure ensures that every detail is seamlessly arranged, including all necessary reservations and daily meals. Before hitting the trail, local experts provide a thorough briefing, and you receive an offline app loaded with complete route guidelines.

Spanning 75 km (47 mi) across the Torres del Paine National Park, you will encounter the towering granite peaks at the Base of the Towers and the vibrant waters of Lake Nordenskjöld. The well-marked trail leads you through breathtaking sites like Los Cuernos, the French Valley, and the Le Plateau viewpoint. Your journey then winds past Paine Grande and Laguna de los Patos before culminating at the striking ice walls of Grey Glacier.

After long hours of hiking, travelers can find comfort in either shared mountain refugios or pre-pitched campsites conveniently located right along the route. Hearty meals served directly at these stops provide the essential nourishment needed for a fulfilling, smooth journey.

  • Full itinerary: round-trip hike to the base of the Towers, trail along Lake Nordenskjöld to Los Cuernos, French Valley to the Le Plateau viewpoint, hike to the Grey Glacier viewpoint, walk back to Paine Grande, and the catamaran across Lake Pehoé.
  • Climb the steep moraine to the Base of the Towers, three granite towers above a glacial lake, on a 22 km round trip on Day 1.
  • Walk into the French Valley to the Le Plateau viewpoint, under a hanging glacier and the walls of Cerro Catedral and Cerro Fortaleza.
  • Choose your style of refugios or campsites: a bed in a shared dorm or a pre-pitched 4-season tent with a sleeping bag and mattress.
  • Eat at every stop: breakfast and dinner at the refugio of the night and a box lunch for the trail every day.
  • No guide on the trail: a briefing by our local team in Puerto Natales, a well-marked route, and an offline navigation app with maps, tips, and your bookings.
  • All-inclusive experience: round-trip public bus to the park, the park shuttle and entrance, 4 nights of accommodation, all meals on the trail, the Lake Pehoé catamaran, camping gear, the briefing, and the navigation app.
  • Please note: this is a self-guided trek (no guide walks with you), but travelers meet with a local team of experts the day before for a briefing. The bookings are fixed, but the weather in Torres del Paine changes fast, and park rules or the providers on the ground can alter a campsite, a refugio, or a crossing time.

Itinerary

Day 1

Bus to Torres del Paine / Base of the Towers Hike / Night at Central

  • Public busPuerto Natales → Laguna Amarga · 7 AM · 2h in total, plus a 20-min shuttle
  • Base of the Towers hike22 km (13.6 mi) round trip · 8–10h · Strenuous
  • OvernightCentral · Shared dorm in the refugio or tent at the campsite

Your self-guided W Trek starts at the Puerto Natales bus terminal at 6:45 AM for the 7 AM public bus into the park. The road crosses estancias and open Patagonian plains. When you arrive at Laguna Amarga, the park’s main entrance, present your booking’s digital park-entry QR code before boarding the shuttle to the Welcome Center.

From there, walk to Refugio Central, leave your bag, and start the hike into the Ascencio Valley. The trail climbs to the Windy Pass, an exposed section with strong gusts where you follow the app’s instructions. Just past it, Refugio Chileno is the last stop with bathrooms, food for sale, and internet.

The trail then enters a lenga forest and crosses small streams to a lookout below the hardest part of the day: a steep climb up a huge terminal moraine. At the top, the Towers rise above their glacial lake. Return the same way to Central for a welcome drink and dinner.

The well-marked path climbs about 200 m from the base of Cerro Almirante Nieto and crosses the Bader River before it reaches Los Cuernos. The whole route is in your offline app, so you always know where you are. This is the shortest day of the W Trek east to west—a good one to rest your legs.

The morning is yours. Strap on crampons for an ice hike on Grey Glacier, paddle among icebergs on Lake Grey, or walk to the hanging bridges for a view of the glacier from above. Hikers without a guide may go only as far as the second bridge.

Since catching the final catamaran crossing on Lake Pehoé is essential, be sure to coordinate your schedule closely with the refugio team. After the crossing, a bus takes you back to Puerto Natales, where the self-guided W Trek comes to an end.
