Torres del Paine W Trek: 7-Day Guided Tour in Patagonia, Chile

Chile
6 Nights·7 Days

Overview

The Torres del Paine W Trek offers the complete, 7-day version of this renowned circuit in the heart of Chilean Patagonia. Covering a total trail distance of 71 km, it is a carefully paced journey that balances challenging days on the path with the rugged beauty of the wilderness. Guided from start to finish, the experience provides a clear and uninterrupted connection to the vast natural beauty.

Throughout the journey, hikers traverse the Torres del Paine National Park’s most recognizable locations, starting with the bright waters of Lake Nordenskjold. The trail winds past the dark slate and granite peaks of Los Cuernos before ascending into the French Valley. Adventurers then walk along the shores of Lake Grey, take a boat to the towering ice face of Grey Glacier, and finally climb the steep rocky moraine to reach the Base Towers.

Accommodation on this route blends essential comfort, sustainability, and authenticity. Guests rest closely connected to nature by combining nights at traditional campsites with stays in the ecological domes of EcoCamp Patagonia, powered largely by renewable energy.

  • Full itinerary: Los Cuernos trail along Lake Nordenskjöld, French Valley (with Mirador Británico if time allows), Paine Grande, Lake Grey, boat ride to Grey Glacier, Base of the Towers, Salto Grande waterfall, Los Cuernos and Condor lookouts.
  • Reach the Base of the Towers at 897 m: 22 km round trip and 1,023 m of climbing, the last stretch on a steep moraine of large boulders.
  • Walk with a daypack only: porters carry the tents, sleeping bags, mats and one 5 kg dry bag for each guest.
  • Sleep 4 nights at EcoCamp Patagonia, a dome hotel in the park that draws about 90% of its energy from solar panels and micro-hydro turbines.
  • Cross Lake Grey by boat to the ice face of Grey Glacier.
  • Camp 2 nights at Los Cuernos or El Francés and at Paine Grande, with tents pitched for you and dinner served inside the refugio.
  • Activities guided by an English- and Spanish-speaking local trekking guide, with 1 guide for every 6 guests.
  • All-inclusive experience: round-trip transfers from Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales, 6 nights of accommodation, full board, park entrance fees, Grey Glacier boat, porters, camping gear, and your trekking guide.
  • Please note: Patagonian weather decides the plan. Your guide may change the order of the days or modify parts of the route for weather or safety. In October and April, the Grey Glacier boat and the Base of the Towers hike can be cancelled. This W Trek itinerary runs Monday to Sunday.

From there, the road runs into Torres del Paine National Park. Reach EcoCamp Patagonia at about 5:30 PM, settle into your dome, and meet your guide, who explains how the dry bags work and what the next day looks like.

Day 2

Los Cuernos Trail / Lake Nordenskjöld / Camping at Los Cuernos or El Francés

  • Trek12 km (7.5 mi) · 4–5h · +300 m
  • Max altitude244 m (800 ft)
  • OvernightCamping Los Cuernos or El Francés · 2-person tent

The first day on the trail is a warm-up. The Los Cuernos path follows the shore of Lake Nordenskjöld, with the horn-shaped peaks of Los Cuernos above you—dark slate sitting on the grey granite of the Paine Massif.

End the walk at Los Cuernos, a small mountain refugio on the lakeshore, or at the El Francés refugio, between the Cuernos and Italiano campsites, depending on availability. Upon arrival at camp, your dry bag will already be waiting, leaving the rest of the evening yours to relax.

Meals included: Breakfast / Box lunch / Dinner

Day 3

French Valley / Mirador Británico (optional) / Paine Grande

  • Trek20 km (12.4 mi) · ~10h · +820 m (2,690 ft)
  • Max altitude686 m (2,250 ft) in the French Valley
  • OvernightCamping Paine Grande · 2-person tent

This is the day the Torres del Paine W Trek is known for. A steep trail climbs into the French Valley, at the heart of the Paine Massif.

How far you go depends on the group’s pace: a faster group reaches a hanging bridge at the foot of the massif’s southeastern face, then climbs into the upper valley, below the rock formations called the Blade, the Mask, and the Sword.

After a picnic in the valley, the trail descends through grassland and light forest to Paine Grande. If time and pace allow, the group adds the detour to Mirador Británico, the British Lookout (about 4 km more).

Meals included: Breakfast / Box lunch / Dinner

Towering granite spires and a broad golden cliff face of the Paine Massif rise above wind-bent lenga beech forest on the torres del paine w trek, with patches of snow on the rocky slopes and a deep blue sky above

Day 4

Paine Grande / Lake Grey / Boat to Grey Glacier / Back to EcoCamp

  • Trek11 km (6.8 mi) · ~4h · +271 m (889 ft)
  • BoatLake Grey to the ice face of Grey Glacier
  • TransferSouth end of Lake Grey → EcoCamp Patagonia

Leaving Paine Grande behind, the route skirts Lake Pehoé before heading toward Lake Grey’s northern banks for a picnic. A boat ride across the water brings you right up to the massive ice face of Grey Glacier. Once ashore on the southern side, transport takes you back to EcoCamp, where porters bring your dry bag in the late afternoon.

The boat can be cancelled because of weather or too few passengers. In that case, the group hikes to a Grey Glacier lookout, walks back to Paine Grande, crosses Lake Pehoé by catamaran, and drives to the camp. In October and April, the day may start from Paine Grande via the Pehoé crossing or the Las Carretas trail instead.

Meals included: Breakfast / Box lunch / Dinner

  • Highest pointBase of the Towers · 897 m (2,943 ft)
  • LunchAt the top, by the glacial lake

Hike toward Hostería Las Torres, then up the Ascencio Valley on the eastern face of the Towers, between ridges, beech forest, and streams.

The hardest part comes at the end: a steep moraine of large boulders that leads to the base of the three granite towers, above a glacial lake. Have lunch at the top, then return on the same trail to EcoCamp for dinner.

In October and April, this hike can be cancelled for weather and safety reasons.

Lunch is near Lake Pehoé. In the afternoon, a much steeper trail of 2.5 km round trip climbs to the Condor Lookout, over Lake Pehoé, the Paine River, and the western side of the park. Back at EcoCamp Patagonia, the evening ends with a farewell dinner.
