Santa Cruz Trek, Peru: 6 Days in the Cordillera Blanca

Huaraz
5 Nights·6 Days

Overview

The Santa Cruz trek begins in Huaraz, bringing hikers into the crisp air of the Cordillera Blanca, the highest tropical mountain range in the world. After two acclimatization days in Huaraz, you’ll spend four days covering about 46 km of rugged mountain trails, climbing from 2,944 meters up to the dramatic Punta Unión Pass at 4,750 meters.

The route cuts deeply into Huascarán National Park, guiding you through the contrasting natural textures of the Llanganuco, Huaripampa, and Santa Cruz valleys, past vivid turquoise glacial lakes and snow peaks rising above 6,000 meters. On the third day of the trek, the trail opens to reveal a lookout facing Alpamayo, a striking peak often celebrated as one of the region’s most beautiful mountains.

With professional bilingual guides and a supportive field team leading the way, trekkers camp at three high Andean sites inside the national park, with all the essential support for a safe, unforgettable journey.

  • Full itinerary: two acclimatization hikes from Huaraz (the Pukaventana viewpoint and Lake Hualcacocha); drive past the Llanganuco lakes and over Portachuelo de Llanganuco Pass; Huaripampa Valley; Paria camp; Punta Unión Pass; Taullipampa; Alpamayo lookout; Jatuncocha Lake; Llamacorral; descent to Cashapampa.

  • Three nights in double tents with sleeping pads at Paria (3,875 m), Taullipampa (4,180 m), and Llamacorral (3,783 m).

  • HikeHuaraz → Pukaventana viewpoint → Huaraz · Half day
  • OvernightHotel Cordillera, Huaraz · 3,052 m (10,010 ft)

The first of two acclimatization days is a half-day hike that starts on foot in Huaraz. A well-kept trail climbs through an eroded canyon whose walls range from ochre and yellow to red and purple; puka means “red” in Quechua.

The Pukaventana viewpoint, near the Bella Vista community, is one of the best views over Huaraz, with the northern Cordillera Blanca and Huascarán (6,768 m), the highest peak in the range, beyond it. After the photos, an easy descent leads back to town for the night at the hotel.
