Ausangate Trek: 5-Day Guided Camping Circuit from Cusco

Cusco
4 Nights·5 Days

Overview

The Ausangate trek is a remarkable 5-day circuit located in the Cordillera Vilcanota in Peru. This challenging route covers a total of 52 km at an altitude of up to 5,050 meters, guiding hikers through a nearly complete loop around the sacred Mount Ausangate. Along the journey, adventurers traverse breathtaking locations such as the trailhead at Upis, the glacial lake of Pucacocha, Ausangatecocha, the towering Palomani pass, and the soothing hot springs of Pacchanta.

Travelers also navigate the impressive Jampa pass at 4,950 meters, standing face-to-face with the retreating glaciers and ice fields of Mount Callangate. Despite the demanding conditions, the views are a great reward, offering landscapes of majestic snow peaks and unique wildlife like grazing alpacas and wild vicuñas.

For an authentic experience, travelers camp in various remote locations surrounded by snow-capped peaks, glacial mountains, and lush green fields. Sharing the landscape with local herders and their horses, the campsites offer a deep cultural and sensory immersion into the high-altitude Andean way of life.

  • Full itinerary: the drive from Cusco to Tinki, a visit to a herding family in Qoñamuro, four days on foot around the mountain over the Arapa, Alcatani, Palomani and Jampa passes, the glacial lakes Pucacocha and Ausangatecocha, and the hot springs at Pacchanta.
  • Cross Palomani Pass at 5,050 m (16,564 ft), the high point of this Ausangate circuit, and Jampa Pass at 4,950 m (16,236 ft), under the ice spires of Callangate.

  • Walk among herds of alpacas and llamas, and look for wild vicuñas, vizcachas, eagles, and condors on the high grasslands.
  • Soak in the Pacchanta hot springs at the end of Day 4, after almost a full circle around the mountain.
