Overview

This 4-day trek across the Lençóis Maranhenses provides an extensive journey through the national park's white sand dunes. During the itinerary, the route alternates continuous walking across the terrain with daily stops for rest and swimming in the various lagoons formed by the rains.

The structure of this experience includes successive overnight stays in the oases of Baixa Grande, Queimada dos Britos, and Rancharia, located deep within the dunes. Resting in the homes of the traditional families who inhabit the region enables direct immersion and cultural exchange, providing an unforgettable adventure in Lençóis Maranhenses.

Itinerary

Day 1

Barreirinhas / Rio Negro / Baixa Grande Oasis

Departure from Barreirinhas, Lençóis Maranhenses: PlanetaEXO's local partner will pick you up at your accommodation in Barreirinhas at 4:30 AM.

The 4×4 ride to the Rio Negro trailhead takes about 2 hours on off-road trails, with a stop along the way for breakfast and sunrise over the dunes. Then, your Lençóis Maranhenses adventure truly begins with a light 6 km walk (2–3 hours) that leads to Baixa Grande Oasis, with lagoon stops for cooling off. Expected arrival: around 10:30 AM.

After lunch and rest, the group returns to the dunes for another swim and sunset. Dinner and overnight at a local family's home.

Please note: instead of Barreirinhas, your trek can start in Atins. In this case, departure is at 6:30 AM. Confirm logistics when booking.

Day 2

Baixa Grande / Queimada dos Britos Oasis

Breakfast at 4:30 AM and departure on foot at 5 AM. The 12 km route (around 5 hours) crosses the dunes and the narrow Rio Negro stream, with sunrise and lagoon swims along the way. Expected arrival at Queimada dos Britos around 10:30 AM.

After lunch and rest, the group returns to the dunes for sunset. Queimada dos Britos is the largest of the oasis communities and a peaceful place for travelers who appreciate untouched nature. Dinner and overnight at a local family's home.

Day 3

Queimada dos Britos / Rancharia

An earlier start: wake-up at 3 AM, breakfast at 3:30 AM, departure at 4 AM under headlamps. The 14 km route (around 6 hours) includes lagoon stops and sunrise from the dunes. Expected arrival at Rancharia around 10 AM, with lunch at 11 AM.

Rancharia is a small, welcoming community of about 15 families. It is home to Lagoa Bicudo Gordo, one of the largest and most impressive lagoons in the park. After a rest, the afternoon brings another swim and sunset over the dunes. Dinner and overnight at a local family's home.

Day 4

Rancharia / Lagoa do Junco & Cajueiro / Santo Amaro

The final and longest walking day of the Lençóis Maranhenses trekking experience. Wake up at 3 AM, have breakfast, and depart at 4 AM for a 16 km hike (around 5 hours) toward Lagoa do Junco, one of the most beautiful lagoons in the park. A stop along the way for sunrise and a final swim.

Expected arrival at the lagoon at around 9 AM, with time to relax and swim. At 10 AM, a 4×4 vehicle takes the group on a 30-minute ride to Santo Amaro, marking the end of the journey. Expected arrival at 10:30 AM.

Please note: onward transport from Santo Amaro to São Luís (private transfer or shared vans at 4 AM and 1 PM) is not included and is arranged separately.
