Arrival at the Estancia Cerro Guido / Cultural Estancia Tour / Mate with the Gauchos

  • TransferPuerto Natales → Estancia Cerro Guido · 97 km · ~1h20 (Punta Arenas: 328 km · ~4h)
  • Cultural estancia tour~3h30 · Manor house, shearing shed and greenhouse
  • At the ruedoMate and candola with the gauchos

A shared transfer takes you from Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas to Estancia Cerro Guido on a road that is paved except for the last 15 km. Settle in with lunch at the restaurant, which looks out over the steppe toward Torres del Paine.

In the afternoon, a guide walks you through the history of this Patagonian estancia: a map of the province and the story of sheep farming, the vegetable garden and greenhouse (with a tasting, season permitting), the manor house, and the shearing shed. The annual shearing takes place in the second and third weeks of December.

Later, meet the excursion team to plan the next days based on your interests. At the end of the afternoon, join the daily gathering at the ruedo, where the gauchos share mate and candola, the local mulled wine.

Conservation Experience / Camera Traps and Guardian Dogs

  • Conservation experienceHalf day ~5h · Morning or afternoon · Age 12+
  • Possible sightingsGuanacos, foxes, rheas, birds of prey, and, with luck, pumas
  • UpgradeFull-day version · 10h · Ends with a sunset outing in Sierra del Toro

The estancia sits on a biological corridor with one of the highest concentrations of pumas in the world. For 120 years, ranchers and pumas were enemies. Today the estancia’s conservation foundation works to let them share the land.

Accompanied by a conservation team guide, explore the estancia’s protected areas. Scan the steppe with binoculars, inspect camera traps, and observe puma research methods. Meet Maremma sheepdogs imported from Italy and France to guard flocks and view light deterrents protecting livestock.

This is a visit to a research project, not a chase. A puma sighting is never guaranteed, and the team does not wait until one appears. The rest of the day is yours, at the estancia or on a second half-day outing.

Meals included: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

A gaucho guide always rides with the group.

Prefer to walk? The Lake Sarmiento hike follows the steppe down to the lake shore, with its thrombolites (rock-like mounds built by microbes) and a view of the Paine Massif.
