Frequently Asked Questions

How to get to the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil?

There are a few ways to visit the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil, but the most convenient one is to fly to Manaus, the capital of Amazonas.

From the US, travelers can choose between two different direct flights, one from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) and one from Miami (MIA)Bogotá (BOG) and Panama (PTY) are also great options for Americans and Europeans to land in Manaus as soon as the plane hits Brazilian territory. Otherwise, layovers in São Paulo (GRU), Rio de Janeiro (GIG) or Brasília (BSB) are to be expected.

The Amazon in Mato Grosso and Pará are also amazing vacation spots to explore nature.

When is the best time to visit the Amazon Rainforest?

Although the Amazon is considered a year-round destination, the period from January to September offers the best climate conditions because it avoids the peak of Dry Season at the same time that there are good hiking trail options and enough water for aquatic activities.

Speaking of those, the Wet Season (December to May) is great for people who want to enjoy the Amazonian rivers by kayaking, canoeing, swimming and exploring the flooded forest. Rainstorms are common, but they don’t last too long.

The Dry Season (June to November) is popular because it usually allows both water and land-based activities. However, it’s important to notice that extended droughts are becoming more frequent, especially from October to December. This causes low water levels and limited access to a few areas and itineraries, but things tend to get better by January.

I learned so many things I never knew before and I will cherish all of the memories. If you express interest in anything, the guides are more than happy to tell you more. The day with Leandro was particularly magical. Dr. Ramon gave us a bonus history of Brazil lecture because we were asking him so many questions about the country, and it was probably the best highlight of our entire two week trip to Brazil. You learn so many secrets when you're here, like the fact there are almost zero mosquitos - instead of mosquitos they have butterflies. Cassava is actually the same plant as yuca, but it's prepared in so many different ways. Douglas was manning the gate to the property, but he was not phased at all when I showed up randomly trying to take pictures of birds (there was a cecropia tree near the entrance that the toucans and tanagers were visiting habitually), and so spending time with Douglas ended up being another highlight. He was showing me all kinds of things just around the guard station: iguanas, monkeys, trogons, etc. …read more read less

We had a cottage with a super comfortable bed, outdoor/ indoor shower (it is covered with glass so you get daylight and a jungle view) There is a deck with a hammock protected by mosquito screens. You are given a list of activities for each day of your stay. You don't have to do them, but as they are already set up, all you have to do is turn up on time. Every guide we had was exceptional. Their knowledge and enthusiasm ensured we got the best experience. All the staff were polite, helpful and happy. I believe they work more as a family and genuinely want you to enjoy every minute of your stay. Even the gardeners and maintenance guys smile and greet you. It was marvellous. Then there is the wonderful food. Breakfast, three course lunch, three course dinner. Different choices every day of local dishes and more international styles. The desserts were my favorites. There are few mosquitoes on the river because of the acidity of the water. However, the Jungle is full of them and when it rains they come out in force. So long trousers, long sleeves, closed in shoes and plenty of repellent. They can get through your shirt, so don't take any chances. They even got my neck, ears and all over my hands. Best repellent is called Off, they have some at the lodge. There are plenty of seating areas with fans for you to relax and a nice pool. A floating bar down by the river. You will be on a boat to access every activity, you have a life vest. There are steps down to the boats and some of the activities involve walking up some slopes. I am 66, reasonably fit and none of it was a problem for me. We felt very privileged to be there, to see the Amazon and be part of it's regeneration by contributing in a small way. It is definitely one of the best things we have ever done. …read more read less

  6. Great way to see the Amazon

The accommodations are top-notch and very comfortable, contrary to We just completed a four-day, three-night stay at the Anavilhanas Lodge. It was a truly magical way to see the Amazon from a very comfortable base. The accommodations are top-notch and very comfortable, contrary to the setting in which they are inserted, which is quite uncomfortable given the humidity and relentless heat. According to a local joke, the Amazon has two seasons: winter and hell. Winter is the rainy season, which normally starts around November, and goes through June or July. The rest of the year is drier - and even hotter. We were there in December, which was just the beginning of the rainy season, and the rivers were quite low. We did get rain, but it was intermittent on most days, and very manageable. Temperatures were 80s and low 90s, with high humidity throughout. The stay is organized such that you have two sightseeing outings throughout the day punctuated by delicious meals, and some much-needed downtime in the air conditioning. One of our kids described it as “summer camp for adults.“ The programming throughout the day is quite rigid in terms of the schedule. You have to wake up early, have a quick breakfast, and be ready for your first outing at 8:30 AM. Each outing lasts for about two hours. You then have some rest time before lunch, and an afternoon outing at 3 PM. Then more downtime until dinner in the early evening. The activities are very well organized with great local guides who know a lot about the fauna and flora of the region. We did two jungle walks in different areas, a couple of boat trips (one in the morning and one at night), a visit to a local village, and a canoe ride. They were all interesting. The landscape itself is uniform throughout, with trees and water pretty much everywhere you look. In the Rio Negro there aren’t that many birds because of the acidity of the water, but you do see a few. In the jungle, you don’t see a lot of animals because it is so vast and the animals will hide from humans. We did see snakes and one sloth on a tree, as well as a couple of alligators and river dolphins in the water. Lots of ants, termite, and spiders. If you’re interested in animals, you will see a lot more in the Brazilian Pantanal. The food was delicious and very varied, with plenty of local flavors. Drinks are only included in the breakfast meal. All other alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks for lunch and dinner are paid separately. Filtered water is available free of charge anytime, and they give you metal water bottles to carry with you. They have an odd system where they assign a specific table at the restaurant to each room in the hotel. If you don’t like your table, you need to negotiate with them for a move. Our accommodations were excellent in their two bedroom villa. The rooms are very spacious, and the bathrooms have an outdoor wet area for a shower and bathtub. We also had a screened in area with couches and a hammock, as well as a pool with a deck. Very luxurious. There are also two other pools in the property facing the river, one for families, and one for adults only. Like most pools in Brazil, they are not heated. The river is warmer and also very pleasant for swimming. Transportation from Manaus to the jungle is included both ways. The schedules are also quite fixed. The vans are comfortable, but the road is very bumpy, which means guaranteed motion sickness if you have a sensitive stomach and are sitting in the back. We later learned that there is a possibility for a hydroplane transfer, but it is pricey (Real $10000 each way for up to 8 people) and organized separately. While it is true that there are a lot fewer mosquitoes in the Rio Negro area and the Anavilhanas Lodge compared to other Amazon areas, it is not true that there are no mosquitoes. You will still need plenty of bug spray always and long pants and ideally a light long sleeve shirt for your jungle outings. Everyone in the hotel was very nice and English is widely spoken. Most of the guests are foreign tourists. Anavilhanas does Brazil proud as a great base from which to explore the magic of the Amazon. …read more read less
