Welcome to the adventure of a lifetime, your Chapada Diamantina trek! Today, we kick off the 5-day Vale do Pati trek. At 06:30 a transfer will bring us to the village of Guiné, the starting point of the trek. You’ll get a quick briefing about what to expect and how to keep things eco-friendly. We’ll also double-check all our hiking gear.
Next, we’ll dive into the first part of our Chapada Diamantina trek with a one-hour uphill hike at Aleixo. You’ll love the stunning mountain views as we make our way through plains and streams. Then we’ll reach the famous Vale do Pati lookout. Trust us, this spot offers some of the best views you’ll see on your entire Vale do Pati trek, like something straight out of a postcard.
Now, let’s keep moving! The Chapada Diamantina trek isn’t over yet. Our next stop is Cachoeirão, a must-see with its jaw-dropping views from almost 260 meters up. If we’re lucky and it’s raining, you’ll see over 20 waterfalls adding extra magic to the scene.
After a day full of wonders on the Vale do Pati trek, we’ll head to a local family’s home at Igrejinha (Little Church). Here, you can kick back and enjoy a tasty, homemade dinner cooked on a wood fire. The house is next to a charming little church, a local landmark where community events like masses and weddings take place. It’s the perfect end to an unforgettable day on your Chapada Diamantina trek.
Duration: 8hrs | Distance: 8km | Elevation Gain: 618m
Get ready for the second day of your Chapada Diamantina trek! The birds’ songs signal the start of another epic day on your Vale do Pati trek. Today’s main event is climbing Morro do Castelo. It’s a 2-hour hike uphill, but it’s worth it. We’ll walk through a lush forest and end up in a huge cave.
With flashlights in hand, we’ll explore the cave and then keep climbing to the top. The view over Pati Valley is something you’ll never forget. After soaking it all in, we’ll head back down to continue our Vale do Pati trek.
Up next on our Chapada Diamantina trek is a visit to Cachoeira dos Funis. This waterfall is more than 30 meters high and has a natural pool that’s perfect for cooling off. We’ll stop here for a picnic and recharge before the next leg of our Vale do Pati trek. The trail home is pretty amazing too. You’ll see the sun setting over the mountains, making them look like they’re made of gold. We’ll cross rivers and pass through untouched forests as we make our way back.
Tonight, we’ll get some well-earned rest at Mr. Wilson’s house on our Chapada Diamantina trek. He was the first to welcome tourists back in 1997 and has been a big name in the Vale do Pati trek scene ever since. It’s the perfect end to another unforgettable day on your Chapada Diamantina trek.

Today starts with excitement as we get ready for another adventure-filled day in Vale do Pati, right after a hearty breakfast at Casa de Seu Wilson’s. We’ll share a warm goodbye with our host before we begin our scenic hike.
The walk through Vale do Pati is a beautiful balance of adventure and downtime, giving us plenty of chances to marvel at the valley. We’re making our way to Poço da Árvore for our picnic lunch, a serene spot by a natural pool and waterfall.
This is the place to take a refreshing swim or just relax and listen to the sounds of water falling. It’s the ideal place to unwind and enjoy the peaceful surroundings before continuing our hike. The trail we’ll follow is framed by magnificent mountains and meanders along the Pati River.
Our day’s journey ends at Casa de Seu Eduardo, lovingly taken over by his grandkids, Vitor, Domingo, and Virlene. They will greet us with open arms at their inviting home, where we’ll settle in for a night of rest and some of the best home-cooked food around.
Duration: 7hrs | Distance: 11km | Elevation Gain: 482m
With a satisfying breakfast to start the day, we’ll begin our Chapada Diamantina trek at 8 am, heading towards one of the most intact and picturesque areas in Vale do Pati. Gear up for a hike that’s as challenging as it is fulfilling.
Our path takes us along the Pati River, through breathtaking canyons, all the way to the foot of Cachoeirão. It’s the same majestic waterfall we glimpsed on day one, but today we’ll get up close. At the waterfall’s base, we’ll find ourselves in awe of the stunning views and the tranquil pool that invites us for a refreshing dip and a picnic in this grand and serene setting.
After soaking up the beauty and enjoying our time here, we’ll press on, trekking back to our final homestay. If the weather’s on our side, the afternoon will greet us with a golden view of the canyon as the sun sets, bathing the valley in orange hues. It’s a chance to take in the vast landscape of the valley from an off-the-beaten-path spot.
We’ll conclude our day at the home of Seu Joia and Dona Leu, where we’ll unwind and savor dinner. As night falls, take a moment to gaze at the star-filled sky, saying farewell to this astonishing part of our journey through Chapada Diamantina. It’s our last night here, so we’ll make it count.
Duration: 6hrs | Distance: 10km | Elevation Gain: 541m

From here on, it’s smooth walking across flat plateaus until we get to Andaraí. We’ll have a picnic on the way, enjoying the easy path and the peaceful scenery.

During the Vale do Pati hike in Brazil’s Chapada Diamantina National Park, accommodations primarily consist of modest home stays operated by local residents. These establishments provide essential amenities, including comfortable beds and shared restroom facilities. Although the settings are rustic, they highlight the community’s genuine hospitality, often complemented by traditional Brazilian meals. While the facilities are simple, they provide comfort in a remote setting, ensuring travelers are both immersed in the heart of the national park’s unparalleled beauty and the rich cultural traditions of the local community.
Though serious accidents in Vale do Pati are rare due to its clearly designated trails and its frequent visitors, all of our guides are extensively trained in first aid and preventative measures. If an accident results in minor injuries, we have the option of using mules to exit the valley. However, in more critical situations, the Fire Department is immediately contacted to rescue the injured person, transporting them on a stretcher to the Chapada Regional Hospital in Seabra. To ensure communication in emergencies, our guides are equipped with long-range radios, and local homes have access to satellite internet.

His patience, wealth of knowledge and contagious passion for the Pati Valley added immeasurable value to our trip. The guide went above and beyond, sharing information about the flora, fauna, landscape and history of the region - details that would not have been discovered without his guidance. As we don't speak Portuguese, we really appreciated the guide's excellent English skills, as he translated the information perfectly for the Portuguese and English-speaking members of our group. The home stays offered not only comfort, but also delicious meals and the opportunity to interact with the locals. In short, my experience was extremely positive and I wholeheartedly recommend this trek! PlanetaEXO provided us with an engaging and useful itinerary when planning our trip, was responsive to our questions via email and WhatsApp, and proved they were a cut above the other tour companies we considered using for our adventure. We had so much fun with our guide, who is an absolute gem and one of the elite guides in Chapada. He walked at our pace (despite carrying about 50 kilos on his back), prepared fresh and delicious lunches and was a joy to spend time with. By the end of our trek our relationship had evolved from “guide/client” to “friends” and we hope to keep in touch and enjoy his excellent photographs for years to come. We hope he feels the same about us and would advise anyone (especially non-Portuguese speakers!) to request him as their guide. Chapada Diamantina, and Pati Valley in particular, is a magical place. The literal highs and lows of the trek are absolutely breathtaking, and we would advise any readers of this review to take this adventure, and to do it with our guide via PlanetaEXO. …read more read lessDate of Experience: June 28, 2023
