Day by day
Duration: 8 hours | Distance: 9.25 km | Elevation gain: 584 m
Departure from Lençóis at 6:30 a.m.
Welcome to Chapada Diamantina! Today is the start of our 4-day adventure along the breathtaking Pati Valley hike in Chapada Diamantina. At 06:30 a transfer will bring us to the village of Guiné, the starting point of the hike. Here your guide will brief you on the trip, give you instructions, show you effective techniques and assess your hike equipment.

Start your Pati Valley hike with a 1-hour climb up Aleixos. You’ll be rewarded with incredible mountain views as you climb. The Pati Valley hike continues through flatlands, small streams and more mountains in the area known as Gerais do Rio Preto until we reach the Vale do Pati viewpoint, a picturesque representation of this breathtaking valley.

After taking in the spectacular views, we head towards some beautiful waterfalls. We’ll stop for a picnic at Lajeado Waterfall before continuing to Funis Waterfall. This 30-metre waterfall has a natural pool at its base – the perfect place to refresh and recharge.

We then head to the Igrejinha homestay, where we’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and gather around a campfire before settling in for our first night.

Duration: 7 hours | Distance: 5,75 km | Elevation gain: 528 m
Waking up during the Pati Valley hike is truly magical! After a good night’s sleep, we’ll enjoy breakfast and get ready for today’s adventure: the climb to Morro do Castelo.

This 2-hour hike, although steep, rewards us with a journey through a lush forest and leads to an impressive cave. We’ll use torches to navigate the cave and eventually reach a viewpoint with breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Pati Valley.

We will have a delicious picnic, enjoying the summit of Morro do Castelo, we will have its surroundings with more beautiful views to contemplate and take the perfect snapshot.

We’ll make our way back to the valley floor, the descent will be a mixture of rocky terrain and quiet forest paths until we refresh and chill out at Cachoeira das Bananeiras.

As the day draws to a close, we’ll make our way to Mr Wilson’s house, a cornerstone of the Pati Valley hike experience. Having hosted travellers since 1997, his family, now led by his children Nara and Wilton, continue the tradition of warm hospitality and delicious home-cooked meals. It’s here that we rest and enjoy our second night in the heart of the Pati Valley.

Calixto | Duration: 6 hours | Distance: 7,58 km | Elevation gain: 291 m
Poço da Árvore | Duration: 8 hours | Distance: 12,53 km | Elevation gain: 502 m
Get pumped for day three of your Pati Valley hike! Today’s another chance to explore this amazing valley. After a hearty breakfast, you’ve got two options to choose from, depending on what the group’s feeling

First up, if you’re looking for some challenge and sweat, we can head to Calixto. This part of the Vale do Pati hike offers an awesome mix of uphill and downhill hikes through a forest filled with big trees and lively rocks, rewarded by a stunning 40-meter-high Calixto Waterfall.

If you’re more in the mood for a chill day on your Vale do Pati hike, Poço da Árvore is for you, and offers a natural pool and waterfalls, all surrounded by lush greenery and canyons.

So, whether you’re up for adventure or relaxation, head back to your homestay, contemplating a beautiful sunset turning the canyons of the Pati Valley hike into gold, setting the vibe for our last night in the valley.

Duration: 9 hours | Distance: 16,48 km | Elevation gain: 740 m
Start your last day of the Vale do Pati hike with a delicious breakfast with your host family. After saying goodbye to our friendly host. On the way to our next highlight of the day, we have two different options, depending on the weather and group fitness: the challenging Prefeitura’s Rift, which offers a unique view of the Morro do Castelo, or simply contemplate the beautiful mountains of the valley on a less challenging climb.

After walking our last few kilometres, we arrive at the Cachoeirão viewpoint. This place offers a breathtaking view from 260 metres up. From here you can see another unique view of the valley. If it’s been raining, you may even see over 20 waterfalls cascading down the cliffs, making this part of the Pati Valley hike even more special.

After our last picnic in the valley and a refreshing dip in the Cachoeirão pool, we head back through the flatlands of Gerais do Rio Preto. Here you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Continuing the Vale do Pati hike, we’ll make our descent via the Aleixo’s Trail, contemplating its beautiful sunset, arriving at the village of Guiné around 4:00 pm. From Guiné a car transfer will take you to Lençóis, ending our unforgettable Pati Valley hike adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions
The park can be visited year-round, but each season changes the experience. From November to April, waterfalls are powerful and the landscape turns vibrant green, though trails can be muddier.
From May to October, the weather is drier and milder, ideal for long treks such as the Vale do Pati. Nights can be chilly in Capão and Mucugê, so it’s worth bringing warmer clothes. The caves Poço Azul and Poço Encantado also have unique sunray phenomena at specific months, making timing an important part of your journey.

Most visitors arrive through Salvador International Airport, which has direct flights from Lisbon, Madrid, and major Brazilian cities (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília). From Salvador, you can continue to Lençóis, the main gateway town, by bus or car in around six hours, or take a short one-hour Azul flight on limited weekly schedules to the small local airport.
Once in Lençóis, tours include transfers to trailheads. Some places are reached by van or car, while others, such as Vale do Pati, require a drive to villages like Guiné before starting the hike.
The main entry points are Beco do Guiné (in the village of Guiné), Bomba (in Vale do Capão), and Ladeira do Império (in Andaraí). The choice depends on your itinerary, the time you have, and the difficulty you want to face.
There is no public transport directly to these gateways, so transfers are necessary. All PlanetaEXO travel packages already include this service, ensuring a smooth start to your adventure.
For a more immersive journey, trekkers can overnight in family homes in Vale do Pati, experiencing local hospitality in the heart of the mountains.
Lençóis is lively and well-structured, perfect for first-time visitors who want comfort and easy access. Mucugê is quieter and traditional, appealing to those looking for peace and history. Vale do Capão has a relaxed, bohemian atmosphere, ideal for hikers and alternative travelers.
Igatu, known as the “stone village,” is picturesque and tranquil, while Ibicoara is best for adventurers heading to Buracão and Fumacinha waterfalls.
3 days give you a first impression, enough to see Morro do Pai Inácio, Cachoeira da Fumaça, and Poço Azul.
With 5-7 days, you can go deeper, exploring remote waterfalls, trekking across Vale do Pati, and enjoying time in the villages without rushing. More days mean more variety and flexibility to truly experience the park’s landscapes.

Our guide was exceptional in telling us the stories from the valley and guide us to the important places before the other big groups, so we really felt the uniqueness of being all alone in these magnificent spots - even though there’s not many tourists yet in the park, this was really special to us.
