Mount Roraima Expedition Makunaima
On the Mount Roraima expedition, two things make you uneasy: What is this place? Its forms, its sounds, its silences, its mists, its energies, how many stones, how much water, what is this immensity that seems to have stopped in time? The more you walk, the more you have to discover and, in fact, there are still many places at the top that have not yet been trodden by man.
This mountain seems to be alive, awakens dormant sensations, and elevates the soul to the supreme being that inhabits it. Each of us, makes us rethink values, and review our existentialism, making each person more fragile and stronger at the same time. This is the most complete itinerary, with five nights at the top, going to the Brazilian side, passing through the Valley of the Lost World, on the way to Lake Gladys, an extremely enigmatic and little-visited place in relation to too much, where you spend the night twice at Camp Coati.
Under the gaze of the immense tepuis, the Earth evolved, changed, moved, sculpted beaches, mountains, and deserts, displaced men, and imposed challenges. Anonymous and eternal witness of this trajectory, Mount Roraima is a place of magic where silence emits sounds, stones move, and life travels in a breath of wind. Climbers usually like the expression: “I'm going to conquer the mountain!”. On the Mount Roraima expedition, allow yourself to be conquered. Your experience will certainly be much more intense.

Day 1 - Boa Vista / Santa Elena de Uairén (Venezuela)
900 m altitude - 220km route by car - Temperature 25ºC
It will be the day of the briefing where everyone will get to know each other, receive the last guidelines, and then enjoy the beautiful road from BR 174 to the border with Venezuela, where customs procedures will be carried out, and then overnight in S. Elena de Uairén. Our Mount Roraima expedition is just beginning!
Day 2 - Gran Savanna and Community of Paraitepuy
1300 m altitude - 100 km route by car / 15 km trekking - Temperature 25ºC
Anxiety takes hold of everyone these days, where you immerse yourself in the stunning scenery of Gran Savanna until arriving at the Community of Paraitepuy, and from there, enjoy the trekking to the camps on the banks of the Kukenan River for an overnight stay in a tent, under a starry sky. Day 3 - Rio Kukenan / Base Mount Roraima
1850 m altitude - 8 km trekking - Temperature 20ºC

Day 4 - Base of Mount Roraima / Top of Mount Roraima
4,5 km trekking - Temperature 10°C during the day, 5°C at night (reaching 0°C if it rains)
The path from bottom to top is unlike any other. One of the most beautiful moments of the Mount Roraima expedition, with stops along the way for photos, rest, contemplation of the landscape, and several gardens with bromeliads, many orchids, and small birds. You pass by several igarapés and under the waterfall in the “Paso das Lágrimas”. As you approach the top, you will be observed by the Makunaima Monument, welcoming visitors. Upon arrival at the top, they will be “received” by the “Guardians of the Mountain”, three huge blocks of stones that have the shape of "observers". The weather is unstable, there may be variations in temperature and rainfall every day at the top. Climate and rainfall now have the same forecast while staying at the top.

Day 5 - Valley of the Crystals / Triple Point / Camping Coati - Brazilian side
15 km trekking - 8 hours walking
Starting today, the days will be full immersion at the top of Mount Roraima, with emphasis on the Vale dos Cristais. The place is full of outcrops in various parts of the path. The valley itself brings the feeling of the Macro and the Micro, the extremes, the surreal, the cosmic, and the inexplicable. The energy of this place doesn't translate into words, but into sighs, sounds, silences, reflections, and silent observations. We will pass by the iconic Triple Point, a white pyramidal landmark, which stands out in the scenery, delimiting the triple border of Venezuela (85%), Brazil (5%), and Guyana (15%). From there we will continue to spend the night on the Brazilian side from Mount Roraima, in Coati.

@jkerada
Coati is a place enigmatic, mysterious, and charming, located between two huge stones, where there is an entrance as if it were a cave. It has a kind of hall where it overlooks the sky. There is a kind of winter garden: a small lagoon in the center, surrounded by varied plants, a small paradise. It is a good place for those who like silence and isolation. Those who are willing can walk 500mt to Paredão on the Brazilian side, where they will see the forest of the Mount Roraima National Park in the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Reserve, where live the Ingarikó Indians, and just beyond the Roraiminha (a smaller tepuy). Later that day, we will continue to the Coati camp, which is located in the Brazilian part of the mountain.
Day 6 - Camp Coati / Lake Gladys
6 km trekking - 6 hours walking
Mount Roraima is the House of Makunaima, and like every house, it also has its rooms. This part of the mountain is one of the most hidden, mysterious and, why not say, special and enigmatic places of this experience. Lake Gladys is indescribable. According to the natives, there is a portal to another dimension, literally. True or not, the fact is that there is something inexplicable there. To skeptics, religious, atheists, adventurers, scientists, biologists, anthropologists, esotericists, mystics, and all those who seek in this fascinating adventure the reunion with oneself or with the origin of life, this place makes everyone rethink a lot of things. It will be a whole day tour, 03 hours to go and another 03 to come back, with a little backpack and sleeping in the same camp.
Day 7 - Coati camp/camp near the beginning of the descent
15 km trekking / 8 hours walking
On the way back from this Mount Roraima expedition, a brief stop at the Triple Point, then at El Foso. A place that awakens the child in everyone. There you will understand the reason for this expression. In the evening, we arrive at the camp near the entrance to Mount Roraima, where we will spend the night.

Day 8 - Stone Maverick / Pool Jacuzzi / Lookout La Ventana / Salto Cathedral
8 km trekking / 6 hours walking

Afterward, walk to the Jacuzzi Pools and to the Mirador La Ventana, where It is possible to admire the grandeur of Mount Kukenan (Father of the Winds), with its various waterfalls, including the immense forested valley between the two tepuys. The images are breathtaking, it is a true window with a view to paradise, an appropriate moment to stay quiet and let the breeze touch the soul. After this experience, pass by Salto Catedral, where you will literally feel inside a Sanctuary. And then to Paso de Los Cristales, a suitable place to replenish energy for the next days of trekking. Day 9 - Top / Bottom / Tek River Camp
Level difference 1000 m / 4 hours walking
The day arrived to say goodbye to the House of Makunaima and return to our house in the city. After all, the nostalgia and early longing will run through your mind and your skin, and each look, at each step, will be a sincere “Goodbye”, or “until next time”, or simply: “gratitude for everything” that has been experienced in these days. Start the descent to the base, where we will make a rest stop, have a trail snack, and continue for another 3 hours until the next camp, for an overnight stay with the possibility of the most starry sky of the trip.

PlanetaEXO Staff was great
PlanetaEXO Staff was great. Decent food on the trip. Good guide. I think “rain poncho” should be added to the itinerary list of items. Got a few pictures, unfortunately, it rained both days at the top of the mountain so we didn’t get those amazing shots from one tepui to another. Mountain weather changes rapidly and is very hard to predict. This is nobody’s fault. Nobody can control the weather.
Indescribable experience!
These are the records of the seventh day of the expedition. We woke up early and after breakfast, we got ready for the walk to the indigenous community of Taperapuy, after lunch we would return to Brazil. The expedition to Mount Roraima was an indescribable experience. The magic and magnificence of Tepui is very great! The dream of visiting this world heritage site was fulfilled with a lot of rain, and I would have liked to have seen all the beauty of that place with a little more sun! But in every season there is a beauty! When I was there, I said I wouldn’t go back because I still want to see a lot of places and I can’t do it again. But, today I honestly think that extraordinary places can be repeated yes! I want to thank the guides for all the affection and care in leading the group. To the adventurers in the group: Andreia, Izaura, Cristina, Pablo, Paulo, Cuba, Marck and Felipe, it was great meeting you on this great adventure.
Love in the heights
It will take some time to process the expedition to the top of Mount Roraima. The 87km covered in the last 8 days took us to the limit of physical and mental effort. At the same time, it was a unique opportunity to reaffirm our companionship, friendship, respect, joy, complicity, care, and concern for each other, in this love story that we build daily and that completes 12 years in a few days. It was a celebration we shared with a special group of people we won’t forget, as well as the wonderful team at @roraimaadventures. We took our love to the top of the highest flat mountain in the world and together with it, we made Mr. Carl Fredricksen, the character from the animation UP – Altas Aventuras: traveling with his beloved wife Ellie to Paradise of Waterfalls. Climbing Mount Roraima is a mixture of the real world and fantasy. From the fantastic. It is overcoming fears and accepting limits. It is living intensely and being attentive to the present moment. It’s a journey inside us.
A feeling of gratitude
And the dreamed day arrived. The conquest of the Top of Brazil. The arrival at Pico da Neblina. The Encounter with Yaripo. It is impossible to deny the expectation of meeting him, face to face, with open weather… Calmed by the storms, the winds, stripped of the clothes that gave him the beautiful name. Mist Peak. Yaripo or The Mountain of the Wind.
But what he wanted was to reveal himself in all his exuberance and majesty, dressed in the densest fog, surrounded by the strongest and most intense winds. Surrounded by the storm and bathed in the rain.
And so, welcoming us, enveloping us, we were swept away by a feeling of gratitude. Heeding his call, we climbed the last of the 2,995 meters and conquered the highest point in Brazil.
As a reward, perhaps to crown that moment of full ecstasy, the Mountain wept. Tears of waterfalls surrounded the face of the Mountain. A true festival in endless tears.
Everything connects
Connection: Act or effect of connecting, of connecting, uniting, binding. From the Latin CONNECTARE, “tie together”, “tie one another”, people, networks, glances, cell phones, loves connect. “Con” from together, “Nectare” from tying. Get together. From the root of the verb, “nexus”, Sex is connection; Horny, rivers, and wires. Everything connects. Friendship and hearts. Past and choices. Stories. Seed and rain. Seed and harvest. Coincidence and luck. Connecting is a passport. It’s life and therapy. Connecting is magic. Inspiring. Take away the pain. Recharge. Illuminates and heats. It’s prayer, it’s a bridge. Prayer. Hugs. Connection is invisible. It is not touched but felt. Made faith, peace and love. God inside
Fantastic experience!
It’s been a few days since this spectacular trip ended, but every time I see a photo or some memory of the moments I had on the mountain, it’s a feeling that I’m still there. When I heard that people who go to Mount Roraima don’t come back the same way, I didn’t imagine it was so real. Certainly, Pamela after Monte Roraima is not the same as before. The one from now is much more fearless and willing to live all possible adventures. Thank you Makunaima 🧘🏽♀️🙏🏽 and thank you so much to the whole team for this fantastic experience.
Sacred, strong, beautiful, generous land.
Pico da Neblina or Yaripo, in Yanomami, is the highest point in Brazil, at 2,995 meters and is located in the Yanomami Indigenous Territory, that is, in the backyard of their house. 😉 They call it Yaripo, the sacred mountain of the winds. ⛰ Doesn’t seem that high, does it? Yes, but the difficulty is not in reaching the summit. The challenge is getting to your base and then having to go all the way back! 😂
The warriors did a dance with singing in honor of Yaripo ⛰
The shamans gave us blessings of protection in two rituals with paricá. 🌿
In the forest and in Yaripo there are evil spirits everywhere. With prayers, breaths and sounds, they drive away evil spirits from our path, so that nothing bad happens to us. No one can travel without receiving these blessings. They do it out of pure love ❤️.
But no physical discomfort was able to lessen the joy I felt at getting close to Pico da Neblina. ✨ A place in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, in Yanomami Indigenous Land. Sacred, strong, beautiful, generous land. 🌿 An energy that governs and drives each being, each event.
Beautiful adventure
The place is beautiful, but it is very important to be with a tourist agency. The support of the guides is essential.
One of the best mountain trips I've done
Mount Roraima is not for beginners. To go up to it and visit the attractions, you need to be in good physical condition and hire a good guide who will organize the trip, hire porters and staff who will take the tents, and make your food as well. I went with the company of an experienced guide. The place is wonderful, with different fauna and geography. A unique place on the planet.
Magic place!
I can guarantee that all 16 of us had an excellent time and we were sure that we chose to travel with the best company. There was nothing we could think of or want that wasn’t thought of and carried out by you and always with great affection. We started as strangers and ended as a family. The trail surprised me with its beauty, everything is so beautiful that no photo can convey what we experienced in those days. I was prepared for the difficulties on the way, but I thought that at the top the route would be easier, but getting around the top is more difficult than the route to get there, but that increases the beauty and magic of the place. The scenery, the flowers, and especially the charm and magic of the place. Also impressive is the good functioning of the team, which was always in harmony. They were fantastic, there was nothing they could have done to improve our experience that they didn’t do for all of us.
