Recommend room #8 (spacious with a verandah facing the river, 1 and 1\/2 bathrooms, large \u201cdressing room\u201d for all your stuff, and full bathroom has two showerheads. Almost floor to ceiling windows on two sides. Safari staff is so knowledgeable (they listen and answer and are helpful). Speak English. Safaris are in open heavy duty (think diesel) jeeps, with lots of off road exploration and explanation. Take seriously the need for bug repellent. November mornings were cold enough for 4 layers; days got hot.\r\n\r\nSpecial dinners were really special (not gonna give anything away here).\r\n\r\nDefinitely do Oncafari jaguar tours (we saw 9 jaguars in 3 days) and the hyacinth macaw tour exceeded all expectations. You are surrounded by the amazing Pantanal flora and fauna and are staying in supremely comfortable accommodations. The food is excellent and they make an excellent G&amp;T at the bar. It is the staff that makes it really special though. The welcome is generous and everything is spotlessly clean. Days are spent on a safari in the morning and another one in the evening. We saw all of the Pantanal\u2019s big 5 (jaguar, capybara, caiman, marsh deer, and giant anteater). Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and his enthusiasm bought everything into close focus. Our driver was also great and fearless when we got stuck in the mud having just spotted a large male jaguar. The add-on Oncafari jaguar tour is also excellent. The guides were a brilliant team. The grounds around the Casa are manicured to perfection and sit around a beautiful pool area. The interiors are all gorgeously decorated as well . The food is beyond superb and healthy and fresh with serious variety . They also have amazing dinners in the bush. Also a full gym and sauna. Animals abound everywhere \u2013 even next to your room are macaws and capybaras. We saw jaguar, capybaras, anteaters , tapirs, ocelot and literally an array of amazing and unusual animals . They also have a hyacinth macaw project to see. A heads up on the vehicles \u2013 if you are Akeem photographer you will need to insist on being on the 6 seater vehicle as the q0 makes photography basically impossible. With all the guest arriving on the same day for the same duration means we all explored the environment together. The Lodge itself with its own manager is a delight, large recreation areas, the deck and pool. Our room overlooked a large tree on the lagoon where up to 300 white egrets would roost, flying away from about 5.30 (worth getting up for!) The food was excellent and plentiful. We had shared afternoon\/evening game drive the day of arrival seeing an amazing array of wildlife and birds. We had book a shared Oncafari and we were lucky enough to find 2 different Jaguars and their cubs, along with rafts of birds and four legged beasts. The 2nd day we had a private Oncafari, which was fantastic, our guide was incredible, and our driver was a guide on the Maned Wolf Project, we learnt so much. Sadly, and devastatingly that day the fire that jumped the river started to consume the reserve and after lunch we were evacuated to The Old Farmers House, the rooms were enormous, with large enclosed indoor terraces. Set around a courtyard with central pool, we were advised this was Jaguar territory too so no wandering around alone at night \u2013 plenty of scat as proof! We were escorted at mealtimes (when dark) over to The Owners House for all our meals. The guest from Cordilheria had been evacuated here. The staff worked tirelessly to keep up safe and informed as to what was happening. There was absolutely no drop in the standard of care, All staff were all devastated by what was happening in the reserve with the animals and the fauna. The staff that live within the estate had all also been evacuated from their homes. Given the devastation that was unfolding the way we were treated \/ looked after \/ kept informed \/ offered new lodge locations was incredible. They liaised with our Brazilian and UK agents about onward connections. They way they held it all together is exemplary. The lodge and grounds are beautiful, warm and welcoming. Wi-fi was not great in our room (I think our particular room was just out of range), but I was more than happy to relax in the posh and comfy public living spaces to get online. The gym was probably the best I have seen at a hotel\/lodge. It's brand new, the equipment is well-designed and it has everything you need for a good workout. The staff is young, hip, friendly and helpful. Dining is easy, healthy and fresh, lots of yummy options with a couple very special dinner experiences. Our tracker and guide were so lovely and truly exceptional. I appreciated that our guide started off our visit with a short and informative presentation about the Pantanal that gave great background and perspective. The second guide had a great eye and instinct. The animal experiences: not only did we see jaguars, giant anteaters, tapirs, peccary, capybaras, agoutis, foxes, marsh deer and birds of all sort; we saw jaguars mating, climbing trees, eating fish, with cubs, guarding prey; anteaters carrying babies on their backs; toucans mating. We caught glimpses of the elusive ocelot and tayra. (In contrast with the northern pantanal, we didn't see giant river otter or anaconda here and the number and size of caimans were much smaller. Just noting, if those animals are important for you to see. We were there in the dry season, I don't know if that makes any difference.) We thoroughly enjoyed the other couples in our open air safari vehicle and since some did optional tours with Oncafari and the Hyacinth Macaw project, our safari jeep was not always full. We spent a morning with the Macaw project and the experience was well-worth it. We went along for nest visits, learned so much and even saw a newborn chick! The vet and biologist we spent time with were delightful and so dedicated. They also had a lot of admiration for the owner of the ranch as a visionary and supporter of conservation efforts and the community. We stayed in the lodge; there are individual villas, as well. Unless you are with your own group or truly seeking total privacy, I would recommend the lodge. The facilities are fabulous and there's plenty of places and spaces for quiet space. You can tell, they put so much into every detail to make it a beautiful, memorable experience. Other helpful bits... The road from Campo Grande is really good, until it's not - lol! Once you turn off the main road, there's quite a long drive on an uneven, unfinished road. It's expensive, but probably worth hiring a driver. The lodge will provide options. Regarding bugs, they were only an issue starting at dusk for a while until after sunset - but they were really pretty bad. There was mosquito spray in the vehicle, use it and cover up as much as possible. I had insect repellent clothing and it didn't help alone. One evening the staff hosted a churrasco (Brazilian BBQ) outside the hotel gate for all guests . Another night we had another off site constellation lecture followed by dinner under the stars.\r\n\r\nHowever, the highlight to the Lodge are the safaris. Each morning early and then again in the late afternoon we left the lodge to look for birds and animals. We saw jaguars (including two mating couples), tapirs, marsh deer, capybara, toucans, macaws, rheas, monkeys just to name a few. Each 4x4 had a local as a driver and an English speaking guides. The drivers and guides we had were outstanding! They were passionate about the animals, genuinely excited to find animals for us and to share their knowledge. Each safari is approximately 3 hours in length and I never wanted them to end.
