The lodge itself was really impressive - all meals, the layout of it and the standard. We stayed in a Bungalow and it was incredible. Our family of four - parents and two adult children - spent some time here over Christmas and all had a fabulous time. It was quite hot during our stay, so we quickly learned to cool off with multiple swims, showers and fruit juices at the bar each day. Our guide for the week, Rafa, and the boatman, Leandro, were fabulous, showing us way more wildlife than we ever thought possible. By the end we had more than 200 birds on our lists, together with multiple mammals, spiders, and frogs. The food at the restaurant was fresh tasting and delicious, much of it with Brazilian flavors and produce from their gardens. All in all, Cristalino was the perfect choice for us. The only downside was that our flight home from Alta Floresta was cancelled at the last minute due to weather. Our daughter texted the concierge (even though of course we had checked out). Lucas joined us after a few minutes, negotiated with the airline staff (who spoke limited English) and stayed with us until we had been rebooked. This all took several hours (since everyone else was rebooking as well!). He wouldn\u2019t leave until we completely taken care of - way above and beyond in my view. George Lin our guide was very knowledgeable and with sandro our boatman found animals and birds galore. George is a very accomplished photographer too and was very generous in sharing his photos.\r\nThe food is also an extremely high standard and always very fresh. The wildlife conservation project around the lodge is truly noteworthy and worth every dollar you spend here.\r\nThe activities are interesting and the naturalist and ornithologist guides are experienced. We saw rare species of both birds and mammals, and tapirs on several occasions. The absence of air conditioning in the rooms is explained by environmental reasons, so we put up with the heat in the rooms because the coherence of the project requires it. The rooms are, however, well designed to allow a permanent flow of air. The meals are delicious, varied and made with local products. A welcome change and the best meals of our month-long stay in Brazil. I had the most extraordinary stay. The lodge itself is simple but elegant and part of a large private nature preserve and research facility that is a trust. It takes a long time to get there- from Rio we took two flights, an hour drive over bumpy roads and then a half an hour boat ride but that is part of the charm of the lodge and what makes it even more special.\r\n\r\nWe loved everything about our stay. We stayed in a bungalow with lots of windows to enjoy nature even from our room-in fact we had our closest sighting of a toucan from our bed! And our guide Jessica was phenomenal. She is incredibly knowledgable, attentive and kind. She has a Master's degree in Biology so she knows her stuff. We felt very lucky to have her as our guide.\r\nWe did kayaking, walks, boat rides and climbed the observation tower (I was nervous but once I got to the top so appreciated that I \"did it\" and got to have the unique experience of seeing the rainforest from above.\r\nThe rest of the staff was also wonderful including our boat man and the bar, restaurant and housekeeping staff. As I wrote in the review paperwork they ask you to fill out before leaving, they have thought of every detail (kind of like Disneyland).\r\n\r\nGetting there requires flying in to Alta Floresta airport, approx 45 min van ride, and approx 25 min boat ride. The buildings, common areas, and rooms were re-done within the past 15 years or so (I don't recall the exact years). But we met the daughter of the owner who is the architect. My husband is a general contractor and they had much to discuss about the type of wood used, etc. The bottom line...it's gorgeous.\r\n\r\nSince I could write a lot about this place, I'm going to go to bullets for brevity:\r\n\r\n- Rooms are spacious with every detail thought out for clothes storage. Two showers, one inside and one outside (which we used often due to the heat). No AC but we were pleasantly surprised at the effectiveness of the fan and slept well every night.\r\n\r\n- We are not \"birders\" in the true sense, but if you are, you'll love this place. From the macaws nesting on the property trees, to the hundreds of birds you can see on hikes and boat trips, you'll be amazed. There were several guests who got to see the Harpe Eagle (if you don't know what that is, please look it up...it's stunning).\r\n\r\n- The employees are super sweet and gracious. Whatever you need, they will deliver. We tipped several individuals generously (like the breakfast cook, bartender, and waiter) who were so thoughtful and just great people.\r\n\r\n- The amount and deliciousness of the food is incredible. And often local dishes and flavors are served. One night they grilled fresh-caught local fish in the common area fire pit. If there were more smart, motivated and right-minded young people like Jessica, the world would be a brilliant place.\r\n\r\nFor the average Joe visitor (like us!), you must be open to appreciating the \u201csmall\u201d things \u2014 such as hundreds of purple martins flocking over the river, watching the sunrise from the observation tower as the \u201cflying mist\u201d clears from the rainforest, beautiful butterflies and other fascinating insects, eating the most amazing raw Brazil nuts that will ruin your pleasure for any other nuts forever, the absolutely most mind-blowing plants and trees \u2014 because you are probably not going to see the large rainforest mammals. They are elusive and realistically difficult to see no matter where you go in the Amazon.\r\n\r\nThe beauty of this place also lies in its ethos of conservation and sustainability. We stayed in two junior bungalows and it was a heartwarming sight to behold the banana trees and heliconias in the yard that would be treating the waste from the bungalows. Although it was probably not awesome for the resort staff to find animals eating the \u201cwastewater treatment facilities\u201d, it was still wonderful for us to see the monkeys and capybaras right in the yard, drawn to the bananas and other edibles from the system. In fact, to see amazing creatures and beautiful birds (all manner of macaws), it really was not necessary to stray too far from the lodge itself!\r\n\r\nRounding out the experience for us were several staff members who were incredibly helpful, warm, and willing to help us with whatever we needed. First: kitchen staff and Joao and Eduardo at the bar\/dining area: wow. The food created by the staff and on offer at each meal was good, plentiful and provided something for everyone in our group (including a couple vegetarians). Bar service by Joao was beyond reproach: drinks were made with fresh, natural ingredients and were delicious. The acai ice cream treat (ask for it Brazilian style)?? Good lord: too delectable for mere words.\r\n\r\nEdsel, our boatman, always greeted us with a smile and is single-handedly responsible for making sure we never truly enjoy another regular ol\u2019 nut as long as we live. Once he witnessed our passion for the taste of the raw Brazil nut, he made sure that we got some on each outing in the boat. We will love him forever for it.\r\n\r\nIt is a difficult journey to get here, for sure, but worth it. Our very circuitous route (we were traveling from Central America and not the US to get to the Cristalino) necessitated that one leg of the journey was on the Brazilian budget airline Gol. Please avoid Gol; it was a pain-in-the-neck.
