About Pantanal

The Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world, a particular region of 250 thousand km² that plays a role in the conservation of biodiversity. The annual floods of the region's rivers affect about 80% of the Pantanal and transform the region into an impressive water table, causing part of the rural population to temporarily migrate to cities or towns.

 

 

It is through this complex ecosystem, made up of repetitions of rising and falling waters associated with high temperatures, that the ecological balance of the biome is maintained, which provides for the renewal of fauna and flora at each cycle. From November onwards, with the beginning of the rainy quarter in the high regions of the hydrographic basin, the level of the rivers rises, causing flooding in the plain. The abundance attracts many animals in search of food, bringing together the largest concentration of fauna in the Americas. It is this movement that guarantees the maintenance of the species and makes the Pantanal a special and unique place.

 

 

Due to its environmental importance, the Pantanal was declared in 2000 a World Biosphere Reserve. Here is the influence of different ecosystems, cerrado, chaco, and amazon, divided between the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, and the rest between Bolivia and Paraguay, a true National Treasure.

Pantanal Fauna and Flora

The Pantanal's biodiversity is one of the richest ecosystems on the planet and is considered the most preserved biome in the world! The region is home to the highest concentration of animals per km², including more than 650 different species of birds, 262 species of fish, 1,100 species of butterflies, 80 species of mammals, 50 species of reptiles, and more than 1,700 species of plants. Alligators, capybaras, giant otters, monkeys, macaws, herons, baguaris, cormorants, curacas, curassows, parakeets, parrots, toucans, and tuiuiú, among others, live in perfect balance and are an integral part of the Pantanal landscape.

 

 

The tuiuiú stands out in the Pantanal fauna and is considered the symbol bird of the Pantanal because half of the world's population of the species lives here. These birds reach 1.60 m in height and 3 in wingspan.

 

 

Its flora is also gigantic, with more than 3,500 species of terrestrial and aquatic plants, and a huge variety of endemic species that are only found here!

Breakfast; river tour in the Serra do Amolar region, one of the most beautiful Pantanal landscapes, a rock formation located on the border between Brazil and Bolivia, a priority area for forest conservation, serving as a shelter for animals that flee the waters during the Pantanal flood; lunch on board; speedboat ride to see cave inscriptions; dinner on board.

 

 

Day 4

Breakfast; boat trips to see fauna and flora; lunch on board; visit the Acaia Pantanal project, a socio-educational program that brings together efforts for the development of the riverside population of the Pantanal Sul-Matogrossense through educational actions integrated with the preservation of the biome; closing with a gastronomic festival.
