1. Largest State Park in Tocantins

Created in 2001, the Jalapão State Park covers an area of 158,800 hectares. Not only is this the largest state park in Tocantins, but it’s also South America’s most significant savanna.

.

Extending itself across the municipalities of Mateiros and São Félix do Tocantis, Jalapão protects dunes, springs, waterfalls, and vast wildlife corridors as one of the most important conservation units of the Cerrado, a biome that has lost large portions of its native vegetation in recent decades.

2. The Meaning of “Jalapão”

Here’s a Jalapão fact that everyone’s curious about: What does the name mean?

According to historians, it’s linked to a local medicinal plant called jalapa. Once abundant in the region, it was heavily used for its healing properties and became a reference point for travelers and residents.

Photo: Linda De Volder

In Portuguese, the suffix “ão” suggests vastness or profusion. Therefore, the meaning of Jalapão is something like “the land with an abundance of jalapas,” reflecting both the natural resources of the past and the richness of today’s landscapes.

3. Once a Sea

Millions of years ago, Jalapão was covered by an ancient sea. The park’s rock formations, plateaus, and canyons are remnants of this prehistoric landscape. Sandstone walls, eroded over millennia, still reveal marine fossils and ripple marks.

.

This geological past explains the presence of wide sandy areas, rugged cliffs, and fertile valleys, while the constant action of water and wind has shaped the land into the unique combination of dunes, rivers, and springs we see today.

Travelers walking through Jalapão are essentially crossing what was once the seabed. Next time you hike its trails, imagine that the golden sand under your feet was part of a vast ocean floor!

4. The Fervedouros of Jalapão

How can water bubble endlessly from the ground without ever drying up? Jalapão’s fervedouros are natural karst springs formed when underground rivers push water through fine sand with high pressure. This constant upflow makes the surface bubble and creates a buoyancy effect so strong that it’s impossible to sink.

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-34707" class="wp-image-34707 size-full" title=" Aerial view of a crystal-clear cyan fervedouro spring surrounded by lush buriti palms in Jalapão State Park.
There are over a hundred fervedouros in the Jalapão State Park, but only a handful are open for visitation. Some of the most beautiful (and most famous) are Bela Vista, Alecrim, Buritis, Buritizinho, Soninho, Ceiça, Rio Sono, and Encontro das Águas.

These pools are exceptionally crystal-clear, ranging from turquoise to cyan, making them some of the most photogenic spots in Brazil. To protect them, rules are strict: only up to 8 people at a time, 20 minutes per group, and no sunscreen allowed before entering to avoid water contamination.

5. It’s Always Sunny in Jalapão

Jalapão is located in northern Brazil, one of the warmest regions in the country, which means the weather is always sunny. On the hottest days, temperatures easily reach 30 to 34°C, while the average minimum in the winter is between 15 and 20°C.

.

Even during the rainy season (October to April), the sun still brightens the sky and creates the perfect atmosphere for visiting the fervedouros and waterfalls.

6. Dozens of Waterfalls and the Novo River

In addition to the fervedouros, Jalapão is also home to dozens of waterfalls, such as Fumaça, Sussuapara, Soninho, Formiga, Lajeado, and Prata.

Photo: Filipe Gonzaga Ferreira

Velha Waterfall (Cachoeira da Velha), perhaps the most iconic in the entire park, is especially known for its horseshoe-like shape. Nearly 100 meters wide, it’s fed by the Novo River, one of the best-preserved rivers of drinkable water in the world.

Travelers also love Prainha do Rio Novo, a golden sand river beach perfect for tanning, relaxing, and simply appreciating the beauty of Jalapão State Park.

7. Japanese Lagoon

While not inside the Jalapão State Park, the Japanese Lagoon is part of the Jalapão circuit and is one of the region’s most beloved attractions.

@carlosd_jalapao

Situated in the city of Pindorama do Tocantins, the lagoon, with its crystal-clear blue waters and surrounded by rocky cliffs, is part of the Serra Gerais Ecological Station.

With great infrastructure, it includes restaurants, restrooms, camping, activities for children, hammocks, and equipment and shoe rentals (to protect feet from sharp rocks at the bottom of the lagoon).

Visitors to the Japanese Lagoon can swim, take boat trips, visit the cave, and try the zip line.

8. Quilombola History and Traditions

The Rota Quilombola connects three communities in Jalapão: Mumbuca, Prata, and Rio Novo. These villages originated as forms of resistance during Brazil’s colonial period, when quilombos—hinterland settlements founded by people of African descent who escaped slavery—became safe havens for freedom and cultural preservation.

In Mumbuca, travelers discover the art of capim-dourado with local artisans. In the town of Prata, rapadura (traditional sweet made with sugarcane), cachaça with Cerrado herbs (Brazilian destilled drink also made with sugarcane), and organic farming show the connection between food and culture. Meanwhile, Rio Novo holds stories of freedom and settlement by the river that inspired its name.

Visiting these places means sharing experiences. From workshops and music by the fire to local recipes and river dips, the Rota Quilombola invites travelers to support sustainable tourism while learning about living history.

9. Capim-Dourado, the Golden Grass of Jalapão

One of Jalapão’s cultural treasures is the capim-dourado, a plant whose golden stems shine like metal. Local artisans harvest it carefully, weaving it into jewelry, baskets, and decorative items that are admired across Brazil.

<img decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-34742" class="wp-image-34742 size-full" title="A close-up of capim-dourado in the field, the famous golden grass of Jalapão with stems that shine like metal.
The craftwork of this golden grass is not only beautiful but also symbolic, representing the connection between people and nature that passes down through generations. For many families, it’s also a main source of income.

Owning a piece of capim-dourado means carrying home part of Jalapão’s identity. Visitors can buy directly from communities like Mumbuca, ensuring that their purchase supports sustainable livelihoods.

10. Rich Biodiversity

Another fact about Jalapão that is worth mentioning is its fauna and flora, both typical of the Cerrado.

About Jalapão State Park Brazil

The Jalapão State Park, located in Brazil’s newest state, Tocantins, is a vast natural area covering 34,000 square kilometres. To give you an idea, its total area is almost the size of the whole of Switzerland! Established in 2001, the Jalapão State Park is a protected area that is home to stunning waterfalls, dunes, canyons, and rocks, not to mention the famous fervedouro springs, which form unique natural pools.

The region where Jalapão is located has an extremely ancient geological origin and dates back millions of years, which means that, a long time ago, it was a sea. Due to drastic climatic and atmospheric changes over the millennia, the sea receded, giving way to a diverse ecosystem. Today, Jalapão represents the largest continuous area of Cerrado in Brazil with a high degree of conservation and also boasts a variety of wildlife, some of which are threatened with extinction, such as the Pato Mergulhão (Brazilian Merganser).

Beyond its natural beauty, Jalapão is also a centre for sustainable handicraft production, particularly using capim dourado (golden grass) and buriti silk. These crafts are not only a primary source of income for local communities but also the focus of efforts to ensure their production remains both ecologically and economically sustainable. Whether you’re seeking adventure or tranquillity, Jalapão State Park in Brazil offers a range of activities from hiking and trekking to rafting and kayaking, making it an unforgettable destination for any traveller.

Where is Jalapão?

Jalapão State Park is located in the eastern part of Tocantins, approximately 300 kilometres from Palmas, the state’s capital city. The park extends over several municipalities, including Ponte Alta do Tocantins, Mateiros, São Félix do Tocantins and others. Jalapão’s diverse landscapes feature everything from rivers and waterfalls to sand dunes and rocky plateaus, rising up to 800 meters high (2624,67 ft).

Known for its remote and pristine environment, Jalapão is far away from major urban centres, making it an ideal destination for those seeking an immersive experience in the wilderness. This isolation not only provides a tranquil escape but also preserves the park’s rugged beauty, offering a unique blend of adventure and relaxation in the Cerrado Biome.

How to get to Jalapão State Park?

The most convenient and common way to access Jalapão State Park is from Palmas, which hosts the closest airport, the Brigadeiro Lysias Rodrigues Airport (PMW). There are direct flights to this airport from Brasília, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, and Goiânia. From Palmas, due to the expansive area of the Park, expect at least a four-hour car journey to Mateiros, or São Félix, which are the preferred bases for most tourists to enjoy the Jalapão attractions located there. The best way to reach these towns is by a 4×4 vehicle, as most roads are unpaved or covered in soft sand. Travelling with a guide is also highly recommended due to the minimal road signage and the challenging access to the attractions.

It’s also important to note that Jalapão is full of fascinating attractions scattered throughout the area and that touring the park is not a linear journey, but a circuit; typically starting on one side and finishing on the other. It is common for the tours to start and end in Palmas, so all the Jalapão packages from PlanetaEXO include this transportation and offer various options for routes, available days, and activities so you fully appreciate this paradise. Carefully planning your itinerary is therefore essential to ensure a full and rewarding experience!

When planning a tour to Jalapão State Park in Brazil, choosing the right time of year is important to enhance your experience. You can visit Jalapão at any time of the year, but the best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to September. During this period, the weather is more predictable, with lower chances of rainfall and clearer skies, creating optimal conditions for outdoor activities and sightseeing. The closer you get to September, the drier the air will be, which is why many visitors prefer to come in May, when the humidity is still high, there isn’t much rain and the vegetation is greener and more lush. However, the drier it is, the more beautiful the sunsets!

What to do in Jalapão State Park?

Jalapão offers a variety of tour itineraries and activities for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. From hiking scenic trails and floating in natural pools to exploring the cultural richness of local communities, there’s something for everyone. Here are some of the must-do activities in Jalapão:

Floating in the Fervedouros:
Experience the unique phenomenon of floating in the crystal-clear waters of the fervedouros. The most popular in Jalapão include Fervedouro do Soninho, do Ceiça, Buritizinho, and Bela Vista. These natural pools are fed by underground springs, creating a buoyant effect that makes it impossible to sink. It is estimated that some springs are up to 30 metres deep! Don’t be fooled: at the points where the water flows from the springs, it’s impossible to touch the ground. Despite the initial strangeness of swimming in a “bottomless” place, the experience is absolutely incredible!

How many days do I need in Jalapão?

To fully experience the beauty and diversity of Jalapão State Park in Brazil, a stay of at least 4 days is recommended. However, due to the park’s extensive area and numerous attractions, a longer visit enables a more thorough exploration. Each area within Jalapão, from Ponte Alta to Mateiros and São Félix, has its own set of attractions and requires time to fully appreciate them.

Remember, travelling to reach one of these gateway towns of Jalapão requires considerable time on the road due to the distances involved and the isolation of the park, so be prepared to set aside at least 4 hours for the journey. If you’re short on time, this can impact your experience.

If you have the luxury of more time, extending your stay to 5 or 6 days can be incredibly rewarding. With these extra days, you can delve deeper into the park’s natural wonders, enjoy more extended hikes, explore locations off the beaten track, and have more opportunities to connect with the local communities. A longer stay also allows you more time to cross through Jalapão and get to know its main attractions with no rush. Browse various itinerary options for our Jalapão tours.

Do we need a guide to visit Jalapão?

Although it is not compulsory, it is recommended that you visit Jalapão with a professional guide. Due to the dirt roads with sandy soil, Jalapão is only suitable for 4×4 vehicles and the roads are poorly signposted, making most of the attractions difficult to access. In addition, the population density is extremely low (not even 1 inhabitant/km²), meaning that you can drive for hours without seeing anyone along the way to give you directions.

Dreaming of visiting one of the most marvelous places in Brazil? Here’s a list of what to do in Jalapão!

Jalapão State Park is a conservation unit that holds some of Brazil’s most impressive scenarios. Situated in the state of Tocantins, in the North of the country, this is a must-see destination for nature and adventure lovers.

Between golden dunes, gorgeous waterfalls, and several natural pools, the Jalapão tours offers incredible opportunities to have the experience of a lifetime.

Curious to learn more about this paradise? See below a list of what to do in Jalapão!

Jalapão dunes

In the middle of the Cerrado, the dunes of Jalapão State Park are a golden streak of sandstone rocks that form the Mountain Range of Espírito Santo. From the very top, the view of the orangish sand living in the same space as the green vegetation – with plenty of buriti palm trees – can make anyone fall in love.

In some spots, the sand is cut by water currents and even flowers, which creates a diverse and unique landscape, beautifully illuminated by the sun. Sunset watching in the dunes should be included on any visitor’s travel itinerary!

While hiking across the dunes is allowed, climbing through the rock wall is prohibited. To avoid any problems, make sure to follow your guides instructions and the state park rules.

Did you know this region was once covered by the sea? Discover this and other fascinating curiosities in 10 facts about Jalapão

Enjoy the stunning views and have fun sliding down the dunes.

Jalapão fervedouros

Always on the top of the lists of what to do in Jalapão, the fervedouros are, without a doubt, the stars of the show.

Similar to natural pools or wells, these springs gush water from the underground and are surrounded by rich vegetation. The water pressure creates a boiling-like effect – that’s why the word fervedouro is so fitting; it translates to “boiler”.

The water isn’t hot, but it’s that same underground pressure that prevents sinking. No matter how much you weigh, you’ll always float in a fervedouro!

Jalapão has dozens of fervedouros worth visiting, including Fervedouro dos Buritis, Fervedouro Bela Vista, Fervedouro do Ceiça, Fervedouro do Alecrim, Fervedouro Buritizinho and Fervedouro Rio do Sono.

Don’t miss the chance to visit the fervedouros!

Jalapão waterfalls

The waterfalls are as jaw-dropping as everything else in Jalapão. There are options for every type of traveler – from adventure junkies to families or couples looking for relaxation.

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit:

Hiking in Jalapão

Hiking is an unmissable (and unavoidable) activity in Jalapão. To reach certain spots, like waterfalls or fervedouros, hiking is mandatory – whether the walk is light or a bit more demanding.

If you’re a hiker to your core, and you love discovering new trails to explore nature, breathe the fresh air and exercise, Jalapão has amazing options:

Boa Esperança Trail: connecting Fervedouro do Alecrim and the Boa Esperança village, this 9 km trail allows you to witness the wonders of nature across Cerrado vegetation and crystal-clear waters. Flood season (November to April) might alter hiking itineraries.

Travessia da Velha: for expert hikers, it takes over 4.5 hours to complete it (12 km). The group stops for rafting before reaching the final destination, in Cachoeira da Velha. Hiking available only in the dry season (May to October).

Serra do Espírito Santo Trail: hiking activities take place at night, which means there’s no natural light. Moderate difficulty, but the hike is steep (200-meter high). It takes over 2 hours to complete it.

Pedra Furada

If you’re seeking options on what to do in Jalapão, but want to step away from water-related activities just for a moment, visiting Pedra Furada is a must-have experience!

This sandstone rock formation was naturally carved throughout thousands of years. Wind, rainfall, and other natural phenomena created Pedra Furada’s unique shape, with a hole right in the middle.

It might not look like much, but when the afternoon falls, the sun perfectly aligns itself with the opening, creating a bright, golden ring. It’s breathtaking!

Trek through the breathtaking landscapes to reach Pedra Furada.

Rio Novo rafting

An integral part of every Jalapão itinerary, Rio Novo is one of Tocantins River tributaries, one of the few in the world that still have drinkable water.

The river’s strong currents are perfect for adrenaline-filled activities like rafting. Specialized agencies provide everything you need, including inflatable rafts, life jackets, helmets, paddles and safety practices.

After rafting, relax in Prainha do Rio Novo, a peaceful little beach on the riverbanks.

Go rafting on Jalapão!

Local communities (Quilimbola Mumbuca)

The Quilombola Mumbuca community was the first group of people to arrive in Jalapão in the 19th century. The founding members were slaves who fled from the south of the state of Bahia to find a place where they could settle and live freely.

Visiting and engaging with the locals are some of the most authentic ways of diving deep into the heart and soul of Jalapão. By learning their customs, history, and traditions, you’ll be able to help keep the Mumbuca culture alive and learn the very essence of this fascinating place.
